Themain purpose of the position of Seed Analyst I is to conduct regulatory andservice seedtestingactivities in the Turf and Seed section of the Maryland Department ofAgriculture todeterminethe quality of seed samples and to assure consumer confidence.
Receivestraining from a certified seed analyst in how to conduct purity and germinationanalyses following Association of Official Seed Analysts Rules for TestingSeeds and standard laboratory procedures.
Preparesplanting media and plants seed samples in the germination laboratory onappropriate substrates according to the Association of Official Seed AnalystsRules for Testing Seeds and standard laboratory procedures.
Learnsto make seed identifications using the herbarium and reference books.
Maintainsthe integrity of each sample by always cleaning the seed divider balances andall surfaces between samples to avoid contamination.
Usinga personal computer seed divider and electronic balance learns toindependently prepare service and regulatory seed samples received by the Turf& Seed Section for analysis in the laboratories according to theAssociation of Official Seed Analysts Rules for Testing Seeds and standardlaboratory procedures. Make calculations to determine sample sizes required fortesting.
Assistsin the monitoring and maintenance of germinators. Adjust work activities toaccommodate changes in priorities and workload due to seasonal demands.
Performsother duties as required.
Education: Graduation from anaccredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: One year of successfulprogressively responsible seed analysis work in a governmental agency orprivate industry.
OR
Experience: One year of full-timeexperience or its equivalent in laboratory analysis work technical inspectionwork quality control inspection plant nurseryman work agricultural work orequivalent experience involving attention to technical detail or knowledge ofthe characteristics and growth of plants and seeds.

may substitute additional education in agronomy biologyhorticulture botany or a related science at an accredited four-year collegeor university may be substituted on a year for year basis for the requiredexperience.
may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as anon-commissioned officer in soil conservation classifications or soilconservation specialty codes in the soil conservation field of work on ayear-for- year basis for the required experience.
Experiencein the introductory level of the names characteristics and methods ofidentification of basic common varieties and kinds of crops grass and weedseed
Experiencein identifying common seed types according to observed characteristics
Experiencein operating balances scales dividers and other basic equipment used in seedanalysis
