  • Operations include: the filling of entries to form a complete and competitive race card preparation and drawing of races proofing and distribution of overnights changes of riders or other information to ensure accuracy proofing and finalizing of a live racing program.
  • The Racing Official position covers a wide range of duties and must act at times as Placing Judge Paddock Judge Horse Identifier Clerk of Scales Claims Clerk and/or Clocker.
  • Must act at times as Placing Judge. These duties include observing races from start to finish inputting into a computer the horse running order during races to be displayed to the public on the infield tote board and simulcast signal determining the order of finish using a computer and photo finish systems as tools preparing screenshots of the photo finish image to be displayed to the public as necessary using a computer system as a tool plotting of each horses location on the photo finish image using a computer system as a tool.
  • Must act at times as Paddock Judge. These duties include verifying that a published workout is in the program or announced if not available by press time observing the horses in the paddock prior to the running of a race to verify horses are wearing the proper equipment for racing verifying a responsible trainer is in the paddock to saddle the horse and a groom to prepare it for the race monitoring all activity in the paddock to ensure a safe environment reporting to the racing Stewards horses late or missing from the paddock and ensuring that horses are on the track for the post parade in a timely and orderly manner.
  • Must act at times as Horse Identifier. These duties include the monitoring of foal papers and digital certificates monitoring and tracking coggins test results and other required vaccinations and protecting the integrity of the races by verifying the identity of the participating horses using lip tattoos microchips and markings as provided by the Jockey Club.
  • Must act at times as Clerk of Scales. These duties include oversight of the jockeys room ensuring all jockeys arrive in a timely manner weigh out and weigh in jockeys according to their published weights report overweights and weight discrepancies ensure jockeys are wearing the proper equipment for each race coordinate changes of riders and prepare and oversee GPS timing units for each race.
  • Must act at times as Claims Clerk. These duties include monitoring the claim box processing claims ensuring the order for delivery is delivered to the winning claimant and in the case of multiple claims for the same horse a fair shake is conducted under the supervision of a racing Steward.
  • Must act at times as Clocker. These duties include timing horses performing official timed workouts during training hours documenting and reporting the timed workouts monitoring morning training and using the emergency warning system as needed to protect the safety of horses and riders operating the clocking system during official races and hand timing official races as a back up to the clocking system in case of failure.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft applications (Excel Access Word Outlook)
  • Preferred knowledge of the Ohio State Rules of Racing.
  • Preferred knowledge on how to read a Condition Book.
  • Preferred Incompass Software experience.
  • Preferred basic horsemanship skills.
  • Must have excellent customer service/communication skills.
  • Must be able to work in a teamwork focused environment.
  • Must be able to respond to visual and oral cues.
  • Other duties as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This job does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience: High School diploma; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents in English such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to read and communicate verbally in English. Written communication skills in in English may also be required.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals. Ability to perform these operations using units of America money and weight measurement volume and distance. Possess ability to operate an adding machine and have basic computer skills.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certifications Licenses Registrations: Employee must be able to qualify for licenses and permits required by federal state and local regulations.

Must possess a valid drivers license and have acceptable driving history as determined by PENN Entertainment Inc.s auto insurance carrier.
