Job Summary

PT - Academic Advisor


      Salary:
      $20.98 per hour

      Summary of Function:
      Provides academic and career advising for students. Assists with the development and delivery of various advising outreach and retention activities.

      Typical Duties:

        • Serves Students. Provides on- and off-site academic and career advisement to students on sister campus centers in San Luis and Somerton. Addresses the vocational and occupational needs of the students. Assists students with the development of their Educational Academic Plan. Reviews academic progress with students to meet degree/certificate requirements. Advises students on academic and vocational program placement accordingly.
        • Assists in the development application and tracking of student retention programming (e.g. Early Assistance Program Mid-Term Grade Performance Notification/Follow Up Process Freshman Orientation annual High School Counselor activities and area high school visits). Tracks at-risk and academic probation students.
        • Assists Coordinator for Advising and Student Services in implementing district-wide advising. Assists with information and referral resources within the College and the community. Maintains a positive and regular line of communication both with internal and external constituents. Promotes the college by participating in community organizations making public presentations and providing workshops/orientations as directed.
        • Actively promotes the College at local community organizations to increase enrollment of non-traditional students (e.g. presentations small group discussions outreach events enrollment support and individual meetings). Participates in public speaking engagements. Helps to plan coordinate and implement new and existing recruitment events pre-advisement duties including preview days open houses non-traditional student events expos etc. Supports marketing/social media communication efforts.
        • Facilitates seminars and workshops for mentoring students and follows up on retention strategies (e.g. study skills time management decision making and career exploration).
        • Participates in professional development.
        • Supports and participates in strategic planning initiatives and performs other duties as assigned.

        Required Qualifications:

        • Bachelors degree in human relations psychology sociology student services or other related fields
        • Three years of student experience or combination of education training and/or experience which demonstrates the potential for success in the position

        • Applicants may indicate experience working in a community college environment with employability issues affecting chronically unemployed and ethnic minority populations and with community social service resources

        Position Type & Work Schedule:

        • Part-time
        • Up to 19 hours per week
        • Work flexible schedule to meet the program department and/or institutional needs which may include Fridays nights and/or weekends

        • Knowledge of academic advising principles and practices
        • Knowledge of career development theories and career advising strategies
        • Knowledge of student retention strategies early alert models and academic recovery interventions
        • Skill in current technologies and word processing database presentation and spreadsheet software specifically Microsoft Office applications Windows college system platforms software and applications especially those specific to the department operations
        • Skill and ability to be self-directed and to manage ones own time
        • Skill in recruitment event coordination and public engagement
        • Skill in maintaining accurate data and records in CRM or student information systems
        • Skill in facilitating workshops and training sessions
        • Ability to complete all departmental and/or institutional mandatory training or development
        • Ability to organize prioritize follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with close attention to detail
        • Ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative team environment
        • Ability to provide assistance in a professional civil and supportive manner
        • Ability to communicate effectively verbally in writing and in a public setting and to relate to others in a professional manner
        • Ability to maintain confidentiality of protected information and follow FERPA and privacy guidelines
        • Ability to demonstrate integrity professionalism and civility in all job-related actions
        • Ability to analyze problems identify solutions and take appropriate actions to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes
        • Ability to develop individualized academic action plans
        • Ability to monitor student academic progress and provide ongoing constructive feedback
        • Ability to identify appropriate campus resources and make informed referrals
        • Ability to establish and maintain positive effective and collaborative relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization students and the public

        Work Environment:

        • Inside office environment with normal noise and lighting levels
        • Working environment may include various locations across the service district with varying noise levels indoor and/or outdoor locations as needed to support program department or institutional needs
        • Must be able to perform duties in a variety of weather conditions

        Physical Demands:

        • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
        • May lift carry push and/or pull at times a minimum of 10 pounds
        • Occasionally stoop bend kneel crouch reach and/or twist

        Travel:

        • May be required to travel to other locations using various modes of private commercial or fleet transportation and as needed to support program department and institutional needs
