Job Summary
The incumbent will perform all work within Primary Care clinics located at the Hampton VA Medical Center. Promotes and maintains patient health by providing medical services under the supervision of a physician. Assesses patient health by interviewing patients and performing physical examination including obtaining updating and studying medical histories.
FUNCTIONS OR SCOPES OF PRACTICE:
- Responsible for comprehensive care to patients with acute or chronic medical conditions.
- Clinical expertise in dealing with patients with acute or chronic health illnesses or acute injuries.
- Utilizes critical thinking to synthesize and analyze collected data.
- Provides care that is patient and family centered compassionate appropriate and effective for the promotion of health and treatment of disease across the lifespan.
- Utilizes clinical assessments to develop patient centered plans of care which reflect therapeutic educational preventative and rehabilitative.
- Performs a comprehensive patient assessment including health history physical examination evaluations of deviations from the norm and age specific disease screening immunizations and health counseling.
- Formulates differential diagnosis and initiates appropriate intervention based on physical findings.
- Determines the need for consultation and referral of patients to specialty services when medically indicated.
- The incumbent will practice under the direction of a supervising Physician (Section Chief).
- The Chief of Primary Care assigns the incumbent to the Section Chief of the applicable clinic to which he/she is assigned. The Section Chief is responsible for orienting familiarizing and clarifying the incumbent with facility/clinic procedures practices and policies.
- Meets the Medical Practice and Administrative Qualification Standards commensurate with area of licensure and specialty Board eligibility/certification (i.e. physician nurse practitioner psychologist).
- Meets the needs of all customers while supporting the Medical Center and Service missions.
- Consistently communicates and treats customers (patients visitors volunteers and all Medical Center staff) in a courteous tactful and respectful manner.
- Provides the customers with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
- Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
- Provides care and/or services appropriate to the age of the patients being served and which is appropriate to the cognitive; emotional and chronological maturation of the patient.
- Assesses data reflective of the patients status and interpret the information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide care needed as described in the services policies and procedures.

Physician Assistant Basic Requirements
- Masters degree in any discipline or a bachelors degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant AND
- Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) AND
- Currently hold or will hold a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
Perferred Experience: Minimum 3 years of Primary Care Experience

Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
