Job Summary:
The Patient Care Technician supports the nursing and clinical team by providing direct patient care assistance across pre-operative intra-operative and post-operative phases within the ambulatory surgery center. This role focuses on patient comfort safety and support under the supervision of RNs and other licensed clinical staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist patients with admission positioning transfers and ambulation before and after procedures
- Take and record vital signs (blood pressure pulse respiration temperature pulse oximetry) as directed
- Assist patients with dressing/undressing hygiene needs and comfort measures
- Prepare patient rooms/bays and stock supplies for pre-op and PACU (recovery) areas
- Support patient monitoring in recovery alerting RN to any changes in patient status
- Escort or transport patients safely between pre-op OR and recovery areas
- Assist with specimen labeling and transport per protocol (non-clinical judgment tasks)
- Document care provided accurately in the patients chart under nursing supervision
- Maintain a clean organized and stocked clinical environment; restock supplies and equipment
- Communicate patient needs concerns or status changes promptly to the nursing team
- Adhere to infection control practices HIPAA and facility safety policies
- Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients and family members
- Assist with equipment setup/breakdown and turnover between cases as needed
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Completion of a Patient Care Technician CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) or Medical Assistant program preferred
- Current CNA certification (state-specific) may be required depending on state regulations
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification preferred
- Prior experience in a surgery center hospital or outpatient clinical setting preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work under RN supervision
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods
- Ability to lift/transfer patients (with assistance as needed) and move equipment
- Manual dexterity for vital sign equipment and patient care tasks
Work Environment:
- Fast-paced ambulatory surgical setting with exposure to bodily fluids and sterile field protocol
