Job Summary

Role Summary

As a Patient Accounts Representative I at Howard University Hospital you will play a key role in the equitable resolution of your assigned account inventory. You will carry out revenue computations to bill for services rendered; perform third-party and patient billing and follow-up actions consistent with payor and hospital criteria; analyze and reconcile reimbursements; and process revenue payment and adjustment transactions toward the resolution of accounts within your assigned inventory.

What Youll Do

  • Enter and update patient insurance contract revenue and reimbursement data across one or more applications.
  • Review claims with incorrect or missing patient data and correct or add account information to submit accurate timely claims.
  • Review reimbursement against payor contractual and agreement terms before performing adjustments or billing patient responsibility.
  • Prepare and maintain supporting data and documentation for all required activities within the hospital system as defined by departmental guidelines.
  • Review and resolve credit balances accurately monitoring and reporting out-of-the-ordinary circumstances to your supervisor for investigation.
  • Respond promptly to internal and external phone calls correspondence and inquiries related to patient accounts.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.)
  • Three (3) years of experience in billing collections customer service or cash posting
  • Knowledge of standard hospital organizational structure and the roles departments play in day-to-day operations
  • Consistently demonstrated ability to produce accurate Medicare Medicaid MCO/HMO and commercial payer claims that yield substantiated reimbursements
  • Ability to adapt to hospital systems and online third-party payor resources
  • Ability to exercise judgment decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of pre-defined duties that are often characterized by frequent change; ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Ability to assemble analyze comprehend copy record and/or transcribe data and information according to universal practices
  • Ability to start stop operate and monitor the functioning of information systems equipment machinery tools and materials used in performing essential functions
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment and think critically; demonstrated flexibility organization and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including but not limited to Outlook Excel Word and PowerPoint
  • Basic computer and math skills; self-motivated and detail-oriented

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a hospital setting
  • Certified Revenue Cycle Specialist (CRCS-I AAHAM) or Certified Patient Account Representative (CPAR HFMA) certification

Pay & Schedule

This is a full-time non-exempt position covered under the Local 2094 collective bargaining agreement. Pay range: $19.47 $31.16/hr in accordance with the applicable CBA wage schedule and based on experience and qualifications.
