The Pathologists Assistant provides support in Anatomic Pathology under the supervision of a qualified Pathologist. The role involves assisting in the preparation and performance of surgical and post-mortem examinations ensuring accurate specimen handling documentation and compliance with laboratory protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens
Prepare gross descriptions and submit tissue sections for microscopic analysis (frozen and permanent sections)
Accession specimens and ensure proper identification in compliance with pathology policies
Prepare and manage specimen containers and cassettes
Assist with autopsy procedures including external examination dissection and tissue sampling
Support resident training and assist in assessing competency in specimen handling
Perform gross photography of specimens as required
Maintain documentation quality assurance records and lab files
Support tumor procurement for biorepository activities
Assist in quality control of instruments refrigerators and lab equipment
Manage inventory and supply orders for frozen section and surgical pathology areas
Dispose of tissue specimens after report finalization per protocol
Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university
Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists Assistant program OR
PA (ASCP) certification
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Required Skills
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling
Ability to work independently and within a team environment
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Willingness to train and support others
Adaptability and openness to learning new processes
Strong initiative and professionalism in a clinical lab setting
Preferred Experience
Prior experience in anatomic pathology or hospital laboratory setting (preferred but not required
