Job Summary
Job Summary/Definition
Under direction of a school administrator the Paraeducator Special Education assists certificated teachers in instruction to special education students; tutoring individuals and small groups and performing routine instructional support and clerical duties.
Examples of Duties/Responsibilities
1. Reinforce instruction to whole class small groups or individual students.
2. Perform clerical tasks including preparing instructional materials inventory management and bulletin board/displays.
3. Provide student assistance in academic and minor behavioral skill development.
4. Respond with positive behavioral interventions and supports to students who may be dysregulated.
5. Assist with bus boarding and departing.
6. Verbally support students with activities of daily living. These include but are not limited to grooming toileting dressing and eating.
7. Administer first aid and remain informed of medical needs or problems of students.
8. Help with record-keeping and student progress monitoring.
9. Communicate with teachers about student progress and conduct.
10. Assist with keeping learning spaces neat clean and safe.
11. Carry out verbal and written instructions.
12. Maintain student confidentiality.
13. Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Guide
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
1. Basic principles of child guidance and development.
2. Behavior management and motivation techniques.
3. Basic subjects including arithmetic grammar spelling and reading.
4. Record keeping techniques.
5. Proper handling techniques of hazardous materials.
6. Computer operation/data entry word processing and spreadsheets.
Ability to:
1. Work with individual and/or small groups of students within the school environment often engaging directly with students with varying levels of exceptional learning needs.
2. Demonstrate patience empathy and a commitment to fostering student growth and independence.
3. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Training/Education and Experience
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of experience as a Paraeducator or in working with students with learning disabilities in an organized setting.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a First Aid Certificate issued by an authorized agency.
District Paraprofessional Proficiency Exam certification mandated by the State of California for Paraprofessionals.
Certification may be granted in one of the following three ways:
1. Possession of an Associates Degree (AA); or
2. Completion of 48 college semester units (official transcripts required); or
3. Completion and passage of the district-approved proficiency test.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
1. School environment.
2. Subject to standing for long periods walking bending stooping lifting reaching using hands and arms climbing balancing kneeling crouching or crawling.
3. May be required to use hands to handle or feel objects tools or controls; talk or hear; see to read.
4. Exposure to communicable diseases contact with human blood or other body fluids and hazardous materials.
