SUMMARY: Under the direction of a registered school nurse provides support to the school and students at the assigned site by administering prescribed medication first aid and medical assistance to students; maintaining required files records and reports; coordinating students health care needs with parents and other personnel; monitoring student well-being/behavior; maintaining equipment supply and medication inventory; completing student vision and hearing screenings; and assisting other personnel in school office.

1. Administers prescribed medication first aid and medical assistance to students as instructed by a registered school nurse for the purpose of meeting students health care needs and ensuring student body health. 3. Confers with teachers parents and registered school nurse to assist in the evaluation of students health care needs and to ensure students safety well-being and recordkeeping. Provides verbal feedback and/or written documentation and reports observations and incidents related to students health care.

4. Monitors and supervises students in a variety of settings including nurses office playground library lunchroom bus loading/unloading etc. Implements various levels of discipline in accordance with school district and building policies for the purpose of ensuring a safe and positive learning environment.

5. Assists other school personnel as required which may include enrolling students answering phones assisting visitors maintaining records filing paperwork organizing rooms duplicating etc.

6. Maintains equipment supplies medications and work area to ensure availability of items provide a safe and sanitary environment and/or meet mandated requirements. Assists in ordering and/or obtaining supplies materials and equipment to ensure efficient and effective function of the nurses office.

7. Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student fights etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.

8. Participates in training in-services and meetings and learns current and new technologies medical information regulations policies etc. as deemed appropriate.

9. Distributes information as directed by the registered school nurse to staff students and parents on a variety of health subjects for the purpose of conveying information and providing a safe and healthy school environment.

10. Assists with coordination of student vision and hearing screenings and re-screenings as required by the state. Assists registered school nurse with follow-up on referral tracking form and communicates with registered school nurse and student outreach program for appropriate resources.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • No experience required
  • Experience working in a healthcare field preferred
  • Experience working with school age children preferred

LICENSES REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Criminal background check required for hire
  • CPR/First Aid certification required within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Medication administration training required within the first 30 days of employment
  • Immunization database training required within first 30 days of employment
  • Training on delegated nursing procedures required within the first 30 days of employment

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:

  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals preferred; required within 2 months after hire
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment such as telephones copier fax machine etc. preferred; required within 2 months after hire
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with office productivity programs such as Microsoft Office Suite E-mail etc. preferred; required within 2 months after hire
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with basic health screening equipment preferred; required within 1 month after hire
