The Nuclear Medicine Technologist Level III is responsible for performing complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in Nuclear Medicine through the operations of diagnostic imaging equipment to obtain highest quality of diagnostic images with the least amount of radiation exposure. Administers diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals and other associated medications as part of the approved protocols quality control and radiation protection. Independent judgement ingenuity and initiative are essential in addition to responsibility for designated areas procedures and equipment. The Level III technologist will execute all duties of level I and II while demonstrating independent judgment ingenuity and initiative essential to the responsibility for designated areas procedures and equipment. He/she will serve as a unit lead technologist by assisting other radiologic technologists ensuring quality and resolving situations as they arise.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Coordinate/manage scheduling and patient flow for interdepartmental procedures.

2. Supervises as well as performs diagnostic imaging studies under the direction/supervision of a radiologist.

3. Assist radiologists and PhDs in developing new protocols and Nuclear Medicine imaging techniques that are unique to facility.

4. Participate in research initiatives and development of research protocols.

5. Monitor charging of Nuclear Medicine procedures and supplies daily to ensure correctness.

6. Demonstrate Nuclear Medicine equipment for site visits for visiting physicians and administrators.

7. Provide in-service classes in section.

8. Schedule patients for procedures; assist with clerical functions.

9. Provide assistance with orientation and training of new Nuclear Medicine technologists.

10. Obtains and examines the order for a Nuclear Medicine scan to be aware of information such as procedures requested patients condition and any other special notes or comments.

11. Ensures that orders are appropriate to the type of exam recommended by physician. Notifies supervisor of any discrepancies and/or contacts physicians office for correct orders if necessary.

12. Identifies patient service requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons in a position to understand service requirements.

13. Verify the patients ID by checking their name and date of birth on electronic medical record and patients wristband.

14. Always obtain necessary consents and education.

15. Perform complex specialized tasks associated with the operation of Nuclear Medicine scanners and related equipment in accordance with prescribed safety procedures under the direction/supervision of a Radiologist using age-appropriate standards of practice.

16. Ability to integrate diagnostic laboratory results patient history and medical records and adapt exam as necessary. Adheres to Nuclear Medicine protocols to maintain high quality standards.

17. Consistently demonstrates complete competence in performing Nuclear Medicine scans as ordered.

18. As required during a procedure assists positioning patients in required anatomical position for display of body for Nuclear Medicinescans using immobilization and protective equipment as necessary.

19. Maintain proper aseptic technique utilizing universal precaution guidelines (hand washing gloves gown mask eye protection and equipment disinfection).

20. Assist radiologist with imaging procedures starting IVs and injecting contrast if applicable.

21. Assist radiologist with interventional Nuclear Medicine procedures.

22. Evaluate Nuclear Medicine scans for technical quality collate processed images in sequence of exposure and appropriately label. Film/transmit to PACS.

23. Charge procedures and supplies in UChart/Radiant.

24. Dispenses oral contrast to patients for Nuclear Medicine scans.

25. Loads and operates power injectors for contrast media administration.

26. Maintain accurate patient records.

27. Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties; providing explanations of treatment; answering questions.

28. Applies physical age-specific and/or developmental care needs of patients according to their documented physical/development requirement by competency validation checklist:

a. Children

b. Adolescents

c. Adults

d. Geriatric

e. Challenged/Disabled

29. Performs basic nursing functions in the patients care i.e. assists with bedpans emesis basins etc. Assumes care for physical and psychological needs of the patient during scanning procedures; initiates life support measures for patients if necessary; assists in Code Blue procedure during medical emergencies. Performs CPR as needed.

30. Keeps work area in a clean and sanitary condition and stocks exam/dressing rooms with required supplies.

31. Provides on call coverage.

32. Reports unusual findings in a timely manner to appropriate Radiologist/Supervisory personnel.

33. Provides education and training to student technologists.

34. Abide by hospital/department HR policies.

35. Adheres to any regulatory body guidelines governing modality including but not limited to: Joint Commission AHCA ACR FL DOH and FDA/MQSA.

May be designated as Lead tech of shift or area.

Aid in creating employee schedules ordering supplies and staff training.


For those locations that perform Bone Mineral Density exams (BMD) in the Nuclear Medicine department the Technologist must possess a valid State of Florida General Radiographer or Basic X-Ray Machine Operator license within one year of hire.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduate of a Nuclear Medicine Technology accredited program.

Certification and Licensing:

NMTCB or ARRT-N registered. Must possess a valid State of Florida License as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist. CPR and BLS certification required.

Experience:

Five (5) years of relevant experience required. Supervisory experience preferred
