Job Summary
REPORTS TO: Director of Network Operations
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Network Administrator resides in the Office of Technology within the Division of Data Information and Systems Improvement of the Boston Public Schools reporting to the Director of Network Operations. The Network Administrator is responsible for providing foundational network support across BPS schools and administrative sites performing routine operational tasks and contributing to a stable reliable and secure network infrastructure that supports teaching and learning.
The position responsibilities include hands-on network infrastructure support including installation configuration and troubleshooting of network systems while maintaining flexibility to shift among operational priorities and urgent incidents when called upon. The Network Administrator will be responsible for developing and applying foundational technical expertise across networking systems and protocols with a strong emphasis on learning adaptability and continuous improvement.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Network Operations & Support
- Monitor network systems and alerts to identify troubleshoot and resolve connectivity outage and performance issues
- Respond to user-reported problems and service requests related to network services in a timely and effective manner
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date service tickets documenting progress actions taken and resolutions
- Escalate complex issues to senior staff with clear diagnostics and supporting information
Infrastructure Deployment & Maintenance
- Configure install (rack and stack) and maintain network infrastructure including routers switches and wireless access points
- Perform basic configuration tasks aligned with established standards and guidance from senior staff
- Support routine maintenance activities including firmware updates patching and equipment replacements
- Assist with project planning scheduling and implementation of network infrastructure upgrades and deployments
Networking Fundamentals & Troubleshooting
- Apply working knowledge of networking concepts and protocols including VLANs VTP STP OSPF IP subnetting and routing
- Assist in diagnosing and resolving network problems across wired and wireless environments
- Follow established troubleshooting methodologies and operational runbooks
- Identify recurring issues and communicate trends to support continuous improvement
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Create and maintain network configurations diagrams and technical documentation
- Communicate effectively with users and colleagues providing clear updates and technical explanations as needed
- Stay current with evolving network technologies tools and best practices
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Network Operations
Qualifications - Required:
- Associates degree in Information Technology Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 13 years of experience in a professional IT environment
- 1 years of experience supporting network infrastructure in an enterprise or educational setting
- Hands-on experience with installation and basic configuration of network equipment (switches routers wireless access points)
- Foundational knowledge of networking concepts and protocols (TCP/IP VLANs routing DNS DHCP wireless)
- Ability to troubleshoot technical issues methodically and follow established procedures
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt in a dynamic environment
- Experience working in a ticketing system and supporting end users
- A collaborative service-oriented mindset with a commitment to continuous learning
- Experience working with diverse communities and a commitment to equity in access to technology
- Ability to work in a fast-paced high-demand and mission-critical environment
- Current authorization to work in the United States

Qualifications - Preferred:
- Bachelors degree in Information Technology Computer Science or related field
- Industry certifications such as CompTIA Network Cisco CCNA or equivalent
- Experience supporting K12 or large public-sector environments
- Familiarity with Boston and Boston Public Schools
