Position Overview:

Are you looking for an internship that combines software engineering modern data platforms and finance The Multifamily Division within Freddie Mac is searching for talented curious and motivated individuals to support our technology initiatives and strategic business objectives.


This is not your typical IT internship. You will be embedded directly within the Capital Markets Data & Execution Enablement teama highly technical agile group acting as the analytical and technology arm of the Capital Markets business. Our team is responsible for delivering the myOptigo for Capital Markets vision: modernizing how data is sourced governed and engineered and automating complex financial execution workflows.


As a Capital Markets Software & Data Engineering Intern you will gain hands-on experience building production-grade tools rapid prototypes and data pipelines. You will work alongside experienced engineers to design and build solutions using Python Snowflake and automated rules engines directly supporting Freddie Macs multi-billion-dollar securitization and credit risk transfer (CRT) platforms.

Our team sits at the intersection of business and technology accelerating the delivery of workflow automation advanced analytics and data modernization. We bridge the gap by proving value with working software hardening requirements through real-world usage and partnering with divisional IT teams to transition successful prototypes into enterprise-scale platforms.


Your Impact:


As an intern on our team you will combine technical execution with business strategy. Key activities include:

  • Develop Hands-on Automation: Assist in building and maintaining automation solutions across securitization and CRT workflows (e.g. data exception management disclosure preparation and pooling support).
  • Build Modern Data Pipelines: Work with Snowflake and Python to help model curate and engineer data products that enable consistent definitions and trusted analytics.
  • Utilize AI-Enabled Tools: Leverage AI-enabled developer tools and assistants to automate repetitive coding tasks improve development efficiency and enhance software quality while maintaining strong engineering judgment.
  • Support Rules-Based Systems: Help implement and test deterministic rules engines and workflows where absolute precision repeatability and strict controls are required.
  • Collaborate in an Agile Environment: Participate in Agile ceremonies (daily standups sprint planning retrospectives) and work closely with Capital Markets business partners to translate financial needs into software requirements.
  • Practice Strong Engineering Standards: Learn and apply robust software engineering practices appropriate for business-owned tooling including version control (Git) testing documentation and operational controls.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Bachelors degree in Computer Science Software Engineering Data Science Applied Mathematics Information Technology or a related technical/quantitative discipline.
  • Expected graduation date of May 2028.
  • Strong foundation in computer science fundamentals including object-oriented programming data structures algorithms and database design.
  • Strong Python skills (for data engineering automation or APIs) and familiarity with SQL.
  • Exposure to or interest in using AI tools digital collaboration platforms or basic scripting to automate manual workflows.
  • Familiarity with modern data platforms like Snowflake or cloud services (AWS) is a plus.
  • Experience contributing to hackathons personal coding projects open-source initiatives or technical class projects is highly valued.

Keys to Success in this Role

  • Financial Curiosity: A strong desire to learn fixed-income finance concepts and Multifamily Capital Markets products (like K-Deals PCs and CRT). Prior finance knowledge is not required but a willingness to learn is essential!
  • Willingness to Experiment: Comfort operating in ambiguity and a passion for finding the right tool for the job (knowing when to use automated rules scripting or data queries).
  • Hybrid Communication: Ability to collaborate effectively with both business users (traders underwriters analysts) and enterprise software engineers.
  • Analytical Problem-Solving: Self-motivation initiative and the ability to learn new tools and technologies independently.
  • Attention to Detail: A commitment to producing high-quality auditable code and data pipelines where accuracy is critical.

Interns are paid at a set non-negotiable hourly hourly rate for this role is $32/hr.
