    Monroe Public Schools is seeking an outstanding student-centered Middle School Band Director to join our Music Department. We are looking for an energetic and passionate music educator who is committed to developing young musicians while fostering creativity collaboration and a lifelong appreciation of music.

    The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of the middle school instrumental music program and work collaboratively with district music staff to provide a comprehensive and vertically aligned instrumental music experience for students. Additional teaching assignments during the school day may include courses such as Piano/Guitar Music Theory Beginning Band or other music-related classes based on district needs.

    Position Responsibilities

    The Middle School Band Director will:

    • Direct and oversee all middle school band ensembles including Beginning Band at Cantrick School 7th Grade Band 8th Grade Band Jazz Band and Solo & Ensemble participants.
    • Plan and deliver engaging standards-based instruction that meets the diverse learning needs of all students.
    • Prepare students for successful performances at concerts festivals and community events.
    • Foster a positive inclusive classroom environment that encourages student growth teamwork discipline and musical excellence.
    • Collaborate with district music staff to ensure curriculum alignment and a seamless transition from elementary through high school instrumental programs.
    • Develop and implement recruitment strategies alongside the High School Band Director to encourage student participation and program growth.
    • Organize and conduct rehearsals that prepare students for performances at the highest possible level.
    • Maintain accurate inventories of school-owned instruments uniforms equipment and music library resources.
    • Coordinate instrument maintenance and repair as needed.
    • Communicate regularly with students parents administrators and colleagues regarding program expectations and student progress.
    • Attend and actively participate in department meetings professional development and district initiatives.
    • Support and participate in Instrumental Booster Club activities and collaborate with parent volunteers.
    • Represent Monroe Public Schools professionally at all performances competitions festivals and community events.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the building administrator.

    Performance Expectations

    The successful candidate will:

    • Prepare students for participation in Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) events including:
      • District Solo & Ensemble Festival
      • District Band & Orchestra Festival
      • State Festivals when applicable
    • Direct four major annual concerts:
      • Fall Concert (October)
      • Winter Concert (December)
      • Festival/Pre-Festival Showcase (February/March)
      • Spring Concert (May)
    • Coordinate one annual educational travel performance (day trip).
    • Maintain a program that reflects high expectations for musicianship student engagement and artistic excellence.
    • Create learning experiences that expose students to a diverse range of musical genres cultures and historical periods.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelors Degree or higher in Music Education.
    • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with the appropriate Music endorsement (JQ or JX).
    • Ability to teach instrumental music at the middle school level.
    • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues administrators parents and community members.
    • Commitment to continuous professional growth and improvement.

    Preferred

    • Three (3) or more years of successful instrumental music teaching experience.
    • Experience directing middle school concert and jazz ensembles.
    • Evidence of successful instrumental pedagogy and conducting at the MSBOA Class A level.
    • Experience coordinating festivals performances and student travel.
    • Knowledge of instrument inventory management music library organization and equipment maintenance.
