Job Summary

Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from thisexamination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one yearbut can be extended.


REQUIRED TO APPLY:

  1. A valid California Motor Vehicle Commercial Class B Drivers License with endorsements Air Brakes and an 18-month clean driving record.A clean driving record consists of no violations within 18 months of applying.

REQUIRED APPLICATION ATTACHMENT:

  • An official California Department of Motor Vehicles drivers history record for Class B license with air brake certification.

DESCRIPTION


THE AGENCY

The Alameda CountyLibrary provides library services from ten libraries in the cities of AlbanyDublin Fremont Newark and Union City and the unincorporated communities ofCastro Valley and San Lorenzo. The Alameda County Library also provides additionalservices through Mobile and Outreach Services Education and Literacy Servicesand Social Justice Services.

The County Librarywas established in 1910 and is governed by the Alameda County Board ofSupervisors. The Alameda County Library Advisory Commission advises CountyLibrarian Deb Sica and the Board of Supervisors on library services.

The County Libraryis funded primarily by local property taxes with additional revenue from Stategrants and contracts with cities for additional open hours and services.

The Board ofSupervisors allocates a portion of utility users and business license tax whichis collected only in the unincorporated areas of the County to the Library forservice to the unincorporated areas. The Alameda County Library Foundation andactive Friends of the Library or Library League groups in each communitysupport library programs and services. Under supervision drives a Mobile Library performs library clerical duties and customer service. Also performs related work as required.

The classification of the Mobile Library Driver-Clerks load and unload library materials drive Mobile Libraries to locations throughout Alameda County (County) and work directly with the public. Mobile Library Driver-Clerks are distinguished from Library Driver-Clerk in that Mobile Library Driver-Clerks drive a Mobile Library requiring a Class B license and work directly with the public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
TOQUALIFY FOR THE COMPETITIVE ASSESSMENT PROCESS YOU MUST MEET THE MINIMUMREQUIREMENTS BY FULFILLING ONE OF THE PATTERNS LISTED BELOW I or II.

EITHER I
Experience:The equivalent of six (6) months full-time experience as a Library Page or higher-level classification in the County of Alameda classified service and the equivalent of six (6) months full-time experience driving a vehicle of at least 18000-pound gross vehicle weight (G.V.W.) capacity.
OR II
Experience:The equivalent of six (6) months full-time clerical experience that included customer service and the equivalent of six (6) months full-time experience driving a vehicle of at least 18000-pound gross vehicle weight (G.V.W.) capacity.
License:Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Class B Drivers license with air brake certification. Applicants must submit evidence from the DMV showing the current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the past eighteen (18) months.

Special Requirement:Federal law and County policy requires that positions in the classification of Mobile Library Driver-Clerk are subject to post-offer/pre-placement/pre-duty reasonable suspicion post-accident random return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.

Lift and move heavy packages books and library materials up to 75 pounds.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Themost suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:
  • Geography of Alameda County.
  • Numerical and alphabetical filing systems.
  • Proper lifting technique.
Ability to:
  • Drive a large vehicle of at least 18000-pound G.V.W. capacity safely and skillfully.
  • Communicate effectively with the public both in person online in writing and on the phone.
  • Learn library procedures including check out of materials registration of members processing of materials and supplies and maintenance of library equipment.
  • Process and handle library materials.
  • Sort and shelve library materials accurately.
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Type accurately.
  • Perform clerical work of average difficulty that is not usually reviewed for technical details.
  • Troubleshoot and perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Problem solves.
  • Exercise interpersonal sensitivity while working effectively with individuals of diverse Mobile Library repair services.
  • Use GPS apps.
EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILLCONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

  1. A review of applicants application and supplemental questionnaire to verify possession of minimum requirements. Applications will be evaluated for relevant education experience and training. The application must be detailed and complete in order to be evaluated properly. Those candidates who possess the minimum qualifications and licenserequirementsfor the classification will move on to the next step in the examination process.
  2. A pre-recorded virtual oral examination which will be weighted as 100% of the candidates final examination score. The oral examination may contain situational exercises.


Candidates mustattain a qualifying rating on each portion of this recruitment.
