This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit which develops Blue Origins Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origins mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.Responsibilities include:
- Work directly with manufacturing engineers and technicians on the shop floor to assess nonconformances understand fabrication constraints and implement repair or rework solutions in real time
- Perform root cause analysis and disposition nonconformances (use-as-is repair rework or scrap) based on engineering and structural design principles
- Develop repair designs including drawings sketches and documentation to correct nonconforming or damaged structural hardware
- Apply structural analysis and design experience to assess the impact of deviations on strength stiffness fatigue life and overall structural integrity
- Collaborate with design engineers stress analysts quality engineers and manufacturing to develop practical cost-effective disposition solutions
- Support root cause and corrective action (RCCA) investigations for recurring nonconformances driving improvements to design and manufacturing processes
- Generate and maintain nonconformance documentation engineering dispositions and repair instructions in compliance with quality and configuration management systems
- Partner closely with manufacturing to clarify disposition intent walk through repair instructions and ensure proper implementation on the shop floor
- Support first-article inspections and production troubleshooting related to structural fit form and function issues
- Identify trends in nonconformances and provide direct feedback to manufacturing and design teams to improve producibility and reduce recurrence
- Balance schedule pressures with sound engineering judgment to ensure safety and mission success
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering Aerospace Engineering or related field
- 3 years of experience in structural design and/or structural engineering for aerospace hardware
- Experience with structural design of metallic and/or composite piece parts and assemblies
- Familiarity with GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and ability to interpret drawings models and engineering specifications
- Experience developing repair and rework solutions for nonconforming or damaged structural hardware
- Working knowledge of structural analysis principles (loads stress fatigue) sufficient to assess impact of nonconformances
- Experience working within a Material Review Board (MRB) process or similar nonconformance disposition process
- Strong communication skills with ability to clearly document engineering rationale and disposition decisions
- Ability to work cross-functionally with quality manufacturing and design teams under time constraints
- Ability to earn trust maintain positive and professional relationships and contribute to a culture of inclusion
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder) or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
Desired:
- Experience with both metallic and composite structural repair design
- Familiarity with structural analysis tools (Nastran ANSYS or similar) to support disposition assessments
- Experience with root cause and corrective action (RCCA) methodologies (e.g. 8D 5-Why fishbone)
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes (machining forming welding composite layup) and their impact on nonconformance trends
- Experience in a regulated aerospace quality environment (AS9100 or similar)
- Familiarity with classical hand analysis methods (Bruhn Niu Roarks etc.)
