Mission Support Specialist (Generalist)

In this Mission Support Specialist (Generalist) role you will become a key team member of Homeland Security individuals involved in planning and carrying out a wide variety of mission support workforce management staffing and position management administrative research logistics and other program planning activities related to the missions and functions of the Mission Readiness Operations Division.

This position starts at a salary of $50460.00 (GS-07 Step 1) to $80243.00 (GS-09 Step 10) with promotion potential to $97087.00 (GS-11 Step 10).

Typical duties include:

• Performing tasks associated with requisitions purchase orders and budget while coordinating with supervisors and staff to ensure receipt and processing of actions are completed in a timely manner.
• Maintaining various reports and information for the internal Table of Organization for both the workforce and equipment.
• Providing local agency direction and facilitation of creating accepting modifying and transferring of property in accordance with laws regulations and directives.
• Researching suppliers and vendors for the procurement of supplies equipment and facilities then preparing required documentation for approval of purchases.
• Conducting records management for various activities performing audits extracting reports; preparing briefings and reports for management to foster understanding and acceptance of findings and recommending future operational needs.

  • Paying invoices in a timely manner and resolving issues as needed.
  • Reviewing information and reconciling conflicting data.
  • Assisting in gathering metrics for reports and other evaluation products.
  • Verifying accuracy and completeness of information and data.
  • Providing technical assistance and support services to management.
  Experience: You qualify for the GS-09 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level performing duties such as:
  • Assisting senior specialists in analyzing programs to measure performance and efficiency preparing and updating budget spreadsheets and personnel action requests.
  • Conducting new employee orientation.
  • Assisting in the inventorying of local property and equipment.
  • Reviewing and submitting travel vouchers for reimbursement.
  • Providing analytical support on problem definitions policies and procedures.

  Education Substitution:
  GS-07: Successful completion of one year of full-time graduate education from an accredited college or university may substitute for the experience required at this level. This education must demonstrate the skills necessary to do this job. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise a year of graduate education. If that information is not available use 18 semester or 27 quarter hours.
  
  OR
  
  Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) may also substitute for the experience required at this level. SAA is defined as a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale having a class standing in the upper third of a graduating class or major subdivision or membership in a national scholastic honor society.
  
  GS-09: A Masters degree two full years of graduate education a J.D. or an LL.B. degree from an accredited college or university may substitute for experience required at this level. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise two years of graduate education. If that information is not available use 36 semester or 54 quarter hours.
  
  Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the grade levels specified and may be computed by first determining the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify for GS-09. More information on this qualification standard is located here
  
  Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community student social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.
  
  You must:
  • Meet all qualification requirements including education if applicable to this position subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and
  • Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 09/04/2026.

  Residency: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates (as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.
