Mission Support Specialist (Finance)

This position starts at a salary of $74678.00 (GS-11 Step 1) to $97087.00 (GS-11 Step 10).

As a Mission Support Specialist (Finance) you will plan and carry out a variety of mission support budgetary administrative research and program planning activities. You will also perform significant review and analysis of budget management training logistics procurement and other assigned areas.

Typical duties and responsibilities include:

• Planning coordinating and executing of business functions resource allocation and production.
• Selecting acquiring storing and distributing resources such as materials equipment and money.
• Applying knowledge of principles methods and tools for automating developing implementing or administering database systems.
• Listening effectively and clarifying information as needed in order to facilitate an open exchange of ideas and foster an atmosphere of open communication with other organizations.
• Applying knowledge of methods metrics tools and techniques of business process improvement.

  • Preparing justifying reporting on and executing the budget and the relationships among program budget accounting and reporting systems.
  • Expressing facts and ideas in oral presentations to individuals or groups and in writing in a clear convincing and organized manner.
  • Understanding interpreting and learning from written material and applying knowledge gained from written materials to specific situations.
  • Considering and responding appropriately to the needs feelings and capabilities of different people in different situations.
  • Organizing work setting priorities and determining resource requirements for determining short and long term goals and strategies to achieve them.

  Education Substitution: Successful completion of 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree from an accredited college or university a doctoral degree and or LL.M. if related may substitute for the experience required at this level. This education must demonstrate the knowledge skills and abilities necessary to do the work. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise a year of graduate education. If that information is not available use 18 semester or 27 quarter hours.
  
  Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the grade levels specified in the table and may be computed by first determining the applicants total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicants education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for positions at grade GS-11.   Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community student social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.

  • Meet all qualification requirements including education if applicable to this position subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and
  • Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 08/18/2026.

  Residency: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates (as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.
