Position Introduction:

The OU McNair Scholars Program is seeking a Graduate Assistant to mentor undergraduate scholars as they prepare for graduate education and research careers. This position supports scholars with undergraduate research conference presentations graduate applications and GRE preparation while also assisting with recruitment workshops outreach and program events. We are looking for a collaborative and highly organized graduate student who is passionate about research mentoring and helping students successfully navigate the path to graduate school.

The role of the Graduate Assistant is to support the programs mission through program recruitment assistance with program activities and development of mentoring relationships with program participants. Graduate assistant appointment includes: a full waiver of graduate tuition (student is responsible for paying associated fees) a bi-weekly stipend and health insurance coverage. Graduate Assistants are required to work an average of 20 hours per week. Work schedule may vary.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Mentoring scholars through these essential program activities:
    • undergraduate research and conference presentations
    • graduate applications
    • GRE preparation
  • Assisting Program Director with the following:
    • Social media and other program outreach
    • Program recruitment and the participant selection process
    • Seminars workshops and McNair events
    • Research conferences including chaperoning student attendees and driving university-owned vehicles
    • Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree
  • Must be current or incoming OU Graduate Student and enrolled in the FALL 2026 semester
  • Undergraduate and graduate level research experience
  • Experience working with first-generation and low-income students
  • Teaching or facilitation experience
  • Public speaking and presentation experience

Skills and abilities:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Communicate and interact effectively respectfully and appropriately with diverse populations in the department University and community
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills with students colleagues faculty and administrators
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills in multiple genres including understanding different disciplinary requirements in writing (genres tone style)

Department Preferences:

  • Drivers License
  • Masters degree preferred
