At Blue Origin we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. Were working to develop reusable safe and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety collaboration and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit which develops Blue Origins Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origins mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

We are looking for a Systems Engineer III to support mass properties engineering for the Mk1 Transfer Stage. This role owns the day-to-day maintenance and analysis of the mass-properties Bill of Materials (BOM) supports mass property predictions and tracking across the vehicle lifecycle. Youll work closely with design manufacturing integration and test teams to ensure the vehicles mass center of gravity and moments of inertia are understood tracked and reported accurately at every program milestone.

Mass properties data underpins nearly every other engineering discipline on the vehicle from structural margins to guidance and control to propellant budgeting. As a Systems Engineer II on this team you wont just track mass youll actively work with Fluids Avionics Thermal GN&C and Structures to find where mass can come out of the vehicle and partner with manufacturing on trades that balance metrics for the best cost to performance ratio for our customers. Your work directly supports program-level decisions and keeps the vehicle within its mass and CG requirements throughout design build and test.

Beyond tracking and reporting this role is expected to dig into subsystem designs to find and drive mass reduction opportunities. Youll build close working partnerships with system leads championing minimum-mass solutions and partnering with manufacturing teams on trade studies that balance mass cost and producibility.

This is a strong fit for an engineer who wants hands-on ownership of a critical vehicle integration discipline is comfortable getting into the design weeds with other subsystems and enjoys cross-functional collaboration hardware exposure and design reviews.

What Youll Do
  • Maintain the MK1 Transfer Stage mass-properties model keeping component mass CG and inertia data accurate and traceable as the design matures
  • Support mass roll-ups and margin tracking against stage allocations flagging growth trends to responsible subsystem leads and program leadership
  • Reconcile predicted against measured mass properties and support root-cause investigations when discrepancies appear
  • Assist planning and execution of stage and vehicle-level CG and weighing operations including test setup coordination and data analysis
  • Identify downstream consumers of mass properties data and best methods of delivering that data to the teams
  • Track propellant loading and burn-state mass properties across mission phases from launch through docked configuration
  • Generate routine status reports and present findings at design reviews program milestones and regular status meetings
  • Maintain configuration control of mass properties documentation per program process
  • Document assumptions threats methods and uncertainty in all mass estimates
  • Own the Transfer Stage mass budget and allocation flow-down to subsystems negotiating reallocations as the design matures
  • Champion minimum-mass solutions across Fluids Avionics Thermal GN&C and Structures and drive reduction opportunities to closure
  • Lead mass trade studies with manufacturing balancing mass against cost schedule and producibility
  • Serve as the responsible engineer for mass properties at program gated reviews
  • Define the uncertainty and margin methodology and set MGA policy by design maturity
Required
  • 5 years of demonstrated ownership of mass budget
  • Working proficiency with CAD tools (CATIA NX SolidWorks or Creo) able to navigate and interpret subsystem detailed assemblies
  • Demonstrated understanding of center of gravity moments and products of inertia and mas margin management
  • Proficiency with Python and/or MATLAB for data tracking reduction and reporting
  • Ability to earn trust maintain positive and professional relationships and give to a culture of inclusion.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline

Preferred
  • Experience with BOM-based mass properties tracking on a flight vehicle or spacecraft
  • Familiarity with rendezvous proximity operations or docking dynamics and how mass properties drive them
  • Exposure to propulsive-stage mass accounting including propellant loading and burn-state mass properties
  • Experience supporting physical weighing or CG measurement operations or critical lift planning
  • Strong attention to detail when working with large evolving datasets and changing configurations
  • Clear written and verbal communication with ability to present technical findings to a multi-disciplinary audience
