Job Summary

Summary

This position is located within the Department of the Interior National Park Service Southeast Region Division of Maintenance Everglades National Park. Performs simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds exterior structures buildings and related utilities requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry masonry plumbing electrical cement work painting and other related trades.


Duties

  • Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds exterior structures buildings equipment and related utilities refers problems to higher graded workers.
  • Assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
  • Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on such tasks as replacing broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replaces hinges latches and catches.
  • Performs minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels.
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaces faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles.
  • Receives unloads and processes incoming shipments according to established procedures. Reports discrepancies and damage to others responsible for such items. Performs routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances.
  • Collects trash cleans and services chemical toilets restrooms and other campground or visitor facilities.
  • Operates a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work. Operates a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment not requiring special rigging.

    • Minimum Age Requirement: You must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

    SCREEN OUT:
    Minimum Qualifications: Performed carpentry or woodworking jobs such as installing hinges on cabinets cutting and fastening boards drywall installation and building concrete frames. Painted interior and exterior surfaces. Performed basic electrical installations or repairs such as installing fixtures replacing fuses and light bulbs. Performed basic plumbing work such as installing fixtures replacing washers in faucets and unclogging sinks etc. Performed sanitation services such as cleaning sinks toilets sweeping and mopping floors collecting trash and debris and ensuring that there are adequate supplies of soap towels and toilet paper for a public restroom. Operated motor vehicles for picking up supplies and transporting personnel equipment and materials. Performed basic landscaping and grounds maintenance such as cutting grass with push/riding mowers weed eaters power blowers and pruners. Performed masonry jobs such as using mortar tile brick or cinderblock in construction applications. Lift and carry objects weighing more than 50 pounds.

    Physical Demands: Works from ladders scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand stoop bend kneel climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

    Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt spray and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable
