Job Summary

Summary

You will serve as a Maintenance Worker for Pecos National Historical Park.

Salary Range Information: First time hires to the federal government typically start at the beginning salary in the range for their respective grade level.
WG-07: $26.34 (Step 1) to $30.71 (Step 5) per hour - Albuquerque-Santa Fe-Los Alamos New Mexico (AQ) Wage Area


Duties

  • Performs a variety of duties within the full spectrum of maintenance activities including carpentry painting cement finishing plumbing HVAC roofing electrical masonry janitorial groundskeeping roads trails and fence repair.
  • Diagnoses and repairs deficiencies on buildings structures equipment and utilities.
  • Uses common tools to perform a variety of basic repairs and maintenance plus operates small gas and electric power tools such as sanders saws riding and push-type mowers and snowblowers.
  • Maintains and operates well water distribution systems and septic systems.
  • Operates light trucks and miscellaneous equipment such as tractors and skid steers.


Area Information: Pecos National Historical Park is 2 miles south of Pecos New Mexico on State Highway 63 and 4 miles north of I-25. Its 25 miles east of Santa Fe and 44 miles west of Las Vegas NM. The park sits at 6900-7400 feet in a pinon/juniper woodland. Annual precipitation is 7-10 inches with 12-16 inches of winter snowfall. Temperatures average 40F in winter and 80F in summer.     As a condition of employment for accepting this position you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

    This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest meet the organization goals and mission of the agency and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the determining if your employment advances the public interest the agency will consider:

    To qualify for this position you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

    1. Ability To Do the Work of the Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT)
    2. Ability to Interpret Instructions Specification etc. (includes blueprint reading)
    3. Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
    4. Knowledge of Materials
    5. Technical Practices (theoretical precise artistic)

    To be minimally qualifying you must demonstrate in your resume experience you are able to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision for the Maintenance Worker WGposition with at least two of the following trades:
    • Carpentry - constructs installs repairs and replace items such as doors shelves etc.
    • Painting - preparing surfaces determine painting materials to be used and method of application and painting a variety of surfaces
    • Plumbing - replace various valves unions elbows fixtures toilets faucets and various types of pipe and copper lines cut and thread pipes winterize water systems etc.
    • Roofing- repairs and patching tar and paper metal foam roofs and asphalt shingles
    • Electrical - repairs including removing replacing tightening splicing and insulating defective wiring and fixtures
    • Masonry - maintenance measures determines amount of concrete sets forms pours and finishes concrete to blueprint standards and project specifications
    • Water Plant Operator - monitoring pumping equipment regulating water reading meters gauges and charts recording readings and preparing reports

    Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds unassisted following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working climb ladders or scaffolding and bend stoop climb and work in awkward positions.

    Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90 degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust dirt wind and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints solvents etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects.
