Job Summary

Summary

You will serve as a Maintenance Worker with Fossil Butte National Monument.

The primary purpose of the position is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers. Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts.


Duties

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for approximately March through December and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. Non-pay status may range from one to five pay periods (1/1/27-2/28/27).

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

  • Employee will be able to be proficient in general maintenance including but not limited to; mechanical electrical plumbing and carpentry work.
  • Employee will be able to build or rebuild various types of fence for the purpose of livestock exclusion.
  • Employee will need to take water samples and make adjustments to the parks water treatment plants with the incumbent obtaining the Wyoming small water systems operator certification within one year of hire.
  • Employee must be able to work in very hot/ very cold temperatures in adverse weather over rough terrain and be able to work in the field for entire shifts.
  • Employee will be required to operate off-road utility vehicles snow plows and heavy equipment such as an agricultural tractor and a backhoe.

    • Water System Certificate: Must possess and maintain a current Wyoming Level 1 Water Systems Certificate within one year of entrance on duty.
    • Respiratory Fit Testing: The duties of this position require occasional exposure to particles and fumes in painting carpentry grinding or other work-related activities. For safety reasons when hazards cannot be eliminated air purifying respirators are required. Employees using respirators are required to participate in a respiratory protection program which includes medical evaluations. fit tests. and following procedures for proper respirator use.
    • Minimum Age Requirement: You must be at least (1) 18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
    • Age Restriction: You must be at least 18 years of age or older to operate government vehicles.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    For current Federal employees if hours worked per week are not included on your resume you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted.     SCREEN OUTS:
    Minimum Qualifications:
    Have experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the full range of Maintenance Worker tasks in at least two of the trades listed assisting journeymen or other higher graded maintenance workers. Experience must be demonstrated in at least two of the following trades: Carpentry (constructs installs repairs and replace items such as doors shelves etc.); Painting (preparing surfaces determine painting materials to be used and method of application and painting a variety of surfaces); Plumbing (replace various valves unions elbows fixtures toilets faucets and various types of pipe and copper lines cut and thread pipes winterize water systems etc.); Roofing (repairs and patching tar and paper metal foam roofs and asphalt shingles); Electrical (repairs including removing replacing tightening splicing and insulating defective wiring and fixtures; Cement Finishing (building and setting forms for sidewalks and steps mixes pours spreads and levels cement and concrete in preparation for final finishing; Masonry (maintenance measures determines amount of concrete sets forms pours and finishes concrete to blueprint standards and project
    specifications); Wastewater Plant Operator (monitoring equipment and gauges performing routine tests recording the results in reports collecting samples adjusting the rate of flow and amounts of chemicals to be used; Water Plant Operator (monitoring pumping equipment regulating water reading meters gauges and charts recording readings and preparing reports).

    Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds unassisted following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working climb ladders or scaffolding and bend stoop climb and work in awkward positions.

    Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90 degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust dirt wind and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints solvents etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects.
