Job Summary

Summary

This position is located in Seasonal Staffing Office-Joshua Tree National Park in the Building and Utilities Division. The selectee will perform recurring building and or utility and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers.

Open to the first 50 applicants or until 07/23/2026 whichever comes first.

Duties

The major duties of the Maintenance Mechanic WG-09 position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform general carpentry work such as repairing constructing installing and replacing doors shelves windows trim cabinets shelves shutters to buildings and inside of residences.
  • Perform general plumbing maintenance such as maintaining plumbing to kitchen and bathroom fixtures and sprinkler systems and fuel supply pipe systems to buildings and residences.
  • Perform general HVAC work including repairing replacing and cleaning of HVAC systems in housing and buildings.
  • Perform general painting masonry work roofing etc.
  • Utilizes a variety of materials tools and equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of structures and grounds.

    • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
    • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males
    • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
    • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid drivers license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operators License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities) and at your own expense all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid drivers licenses whether current or past possessed by you.
    • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
    • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
    • You may be required to work on-call evenings weekends holidays overtime and shift work.
    • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 20 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
    • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
    • You must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
    • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

    To qualify for this position you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

    1. Ability To Do The Work Of the Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT)
    2. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly Installation Repair etc.
    3. Technical Practices (theoretical precise artistic)
    4. Use of Measuring Instruments
    5. Ability to Interpret instructions specifications etc. (includes blueprint reading)
    6. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
    7. Knowledge of Materials

    There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

    This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

    The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is November-May but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions project needs or funding.

    A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

    Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1560 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402b7) based on series and grade anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

    If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1560 hours during that period you are still welcome to apply. However please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1560 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

    The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1560 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1560 hours unless granted an exception by OPM.

    Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels project needs employee performance or other considerations.

    Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds unassisted following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working climb ladders or scaffolding and bend stoop climb and work in awkward positions.

    Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90 degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust dirt wind and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints solvents etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects.

    The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
