Maintenance Mechanic
Job Summary
You will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic with US Fish and Wildlife Service Big Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex with offices located in Hilo Hawaii. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of construction rehabilitation and maintenance work.
You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 15 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.
Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:
- Installs modifies repairs maintains and troubleshoots new and existing electrical lines circuits systems and associated fixtures controls and equipment on a Service Land.
- Performs the maintenance repair alteration and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick block and stone.
- Operates various electric resistance welding machines such as spot seam and flash or use a manual gas torch welding process.
- Operates a variety of types of heavy equipment to push pull pile or load materials such as sand gravel and earth while excavating backfilling grading or leveling earth to specifications on such projects.
- Conducts maintenance on motor vehicles replace sensors water pumps spark plugs brake shoes mufflers radiator caps condensers engine gaskets a variety of belts and hoses and complete assemblies such as removing old engines and replacing them with new engines.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Upon completion of your probationary period -OR- trial period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification in writing that your continued employment advances the public interest.

For current Federal employees if hours worked per week are not included on your resume you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the work schedule requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for this position you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

- Technical Practices (theoretical precise artistic)
- Use of Measuring Instruments
- Ability to Interpret Instructions Specification etc. (includes blueprinting reading)
- Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
- Knowledge of Materials
