Lecturer Full-Time Temporary

The School of Oceanography at the University of Washington invites applications for a Lecturer Full-Time Temporary position with an anticipated start date of September 16 2026. The successful candidate will join our School on a full time 100% FTE basis for a nine-month academic year.The initial term for this appointment is for one academic year and may be renewable. Recurring appointments are limited to a total of 3 academic years.

The base salary range for this position will be $6800 to $8500 per month commensurate with experience and qualifications or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

This position is focused on instructional excellence with responsibilities that include lecture delivery lab coordination and the training and mentoring of teaching assistants and/or graders. The successful applicant will be expected to teach 5 6 courses per year (10-week quarter system) across all levels in the School of Oceanography of which at least two offerings per year of OCEAN 295 (Chemistry of Marine Organic Carbon) are required and other courses may include but are not limited to:

- OCEAN 102 (The Changing Ocean)

- OCEAN 200 (Introduction to Oceanography)

- OCEAN 201 (Introduction to Oceanography Lab)

- OCEAN 210 (Integrative Oceans)

- OCEAN 215 (Methods of Oceanographic Data Analysis)

- OCEAN 330 (Marine Biogeochemical Cycles)

- OCEAN 409 (Marine Pollution)

OCEAN 295 is an existing large enrollment combined lecturelaboratory course in which the instructor has full responsibility for all aspects of instruction. This includes delivering lectures planning and setting up laboratory exercises overseeing laboratory safety and logistics mentoring and supervising students in both lecture and lab settings and training and coordinating any teaching assistants or graders assigned to the course.

Applicants for this position must meet the following minimum qualifications:

- Hold a Masters degree in marine science or chemistry or related field at minimum by the time of appointment.

- Have one academic year of teaching experience including at least one course as primary instructor.

Desired Qualifications

- PhD in marine science or chemistry or equivalent training/experience

- Demonstrated ability to teach courses in organic chemistry or chemical oceanography at the undergraduate level

- Demonstrated experience in marine science or chemistry

- Demonstrated teaching experience in lab and large lecture settings

- Demonstrated commitment to innovative and effective pedagogy

- Experience working with diverse student populations
