Job Summary
Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as permanent appointments but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for approximately 11 months (early February to mid-January) and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.
First time hires to the federal government typically start at the beginning salary in the range for their grade level.
GS-06: $50630 (Step 1) to $65819 (Step 10) per year - Salary Table 2026-DEN
- Lead full-time career seasonal and/or temporary employees on a regular and recurring basis in which the highest subordinate grade level is GS-05. This position is non-supervisory in nature.
- Serve as a front-line uniformed representative of the NPS answering visitor questions and explaining the areas recreational opportunities including NPS interpretive services concession operated facilities and services campground availability hiking trails etc.
- Perform assignments associated with the collection deposit tracking and expenditure of fee revenue collected from the public in accordance with all NPS and U.S. Treasury regulations governing the handling of government funds.
- Review and verify the functionality of new fee related systems or modifications to existing systems as a result of regulatory and program requirements.
- Review and verify the accuracy of manuals and/or standard operating procedures for the implementation of new and existing system designs and/or modifications.
- Provide informal and formal training and education to employee partners volunteers interns cooperating association representatives etc. regarding automated and non-automated fee processes systems software programs tools etc.
Physical Demands: This position requires standing for long periods of time as well as walking bending and lifting of moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to the high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money. If applicable extreme physical exertion may be required while performing search and rescue wildland firefighting or emergency response duties.
Work Environment: This position typically works at an entrance station campground office fee office remit office visitor center and/or visitor contact station. Work is often performed in small outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature rain snow wind and direct sunlight. Park areas may be geographically located in areas of high elevation rugged terrain or dense populations. High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods. Duties may be performed alone and/or in isolated locations.

- You must be at least (1) 18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Minimum Qualification Requirements: To qualify for this position you must meet the following minimum qualifications:
To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level:
- Specialized Experience Requirement: you must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level of the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors) which is in or related to the line of work of the position and which provided the knowledge skills and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of a Recreation Fee Technician. This experience includes: (1) providing information or assistance to the public in a business or recreation setting; (2) compiling and analyzing information to report; (3) handling tracking or depositing monies (4) using software programs to maintain fee and stock data; (5) resolving issues that arise in the remittance process and assisting staff with fee issues. You must include hours worked per week in your resume.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community student social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.
Requirements Continued:
As a condition of employment for accepting this position you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest meet the organization goals and mission of the agency and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the determining if your employment advances the public interest the agency will consider:
- your performance and conduct;
- the needs and interests of the agency;
- whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and
- whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
Under applicable law the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies in writing that the individuals employment should continue and that their appointment should be the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period such appointments are terminated.
Upon completion of your probationary period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification in writing that your continued employment advances the public interest.
