INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST / NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR HEADQUARTERS

40 HOURS PER WEEK FULL-TIME


We are seeking a skilled and service-oriented Information Technology Specialist / Network Administrator to support the technology infrastructure that enables exceptional library services for staff and the community. The ideal candidate will be an experienced IT professional with expertise in network administration security systems support and troubleshooting along with a strong commitment to customer service problem-solving and delivering reliable technology solutions that meet the needs of Sonoma County Library staff and the communities we serve.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Under the general direction of the Information Technology Manager the Information Technology Specialist / Network Administrator serves as a technical specialist responsible for the design administration security and ongoing support of the librarys technology infrastructure. This position provides excellent customer service while overseeing network systems servers and related hardware and software.


The Information Technology Specialist / Network Administrator plans designs tests installs troubleshoots and maintains complex computer networks and systems; supports technology projects and upgrades; and evaluates and recommends improvements. The position plays a key role in ensuring dependable technology services for library operations staff productivity and public access to information.

DEFINITION

Under general direction provides excellent customer service serves as network administrator and is assigned oversight of network security and email administration; administers telecommunication and information systems servers and related hardware software and operating systems; plans designs tests installs troubleshoots and maintains computer networks phone and wireless systems; performs other duties as required.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general direction from the Information Technology Manager or other supervisory or management staff. May provide training and technical oversight to library staff and contractors.


CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a specialist class in the Information Technology job series responsible for the design administration and oversight of the operations and maintenance of computer networks servers wireless access email telephone network and wiring. Duties include oversight of staff involved in server administration desktop computer development and second level technical support for library computer this classification incumbents resolve the most complex and difficult issues and assists library management with the planning and implementation of projects. Performance expectations include the application of industry best practices library policies and procedures library computing policies and broad job knowledge to the development of technical solutions to a wide range of issues. Independent judgment is used in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. This class is distinguished from the Information Technology Manager in that the latter is responsible for the oversight and management of the entire Information Technology Department including policy development budget administration and regular strategic planning with the library Director and other members of the library management team.


EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS(Illustrative Only)

  • Researches installs configures and maintains all network hardware and software including switches routers and firewalls for functionality and security.
  • Manages network architecture including local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) technologies.
  • Manages multiple servers workstations and terminals ensuring proper integration of these components with existing system architecture.
  • Implements new systems programs and hardware and software upgrades; supports technical requirements of software for users; identifies analyzes and resolves software and network problems.
  • Coordinates projects personnel and systems to facilitate access to the librarys inter-networked computer systems; provides adequate smooth and efficient computer data network services for library staff and users; receives prioritizes and coordinates responses to work orders; estimates and provides adequate materials equipment and staff needed.

  • Troubleshoots network connectivity problems; monitors the performance of the network system; tracks possible problem areas affecting response time and prepares recommendations for correction of problems and improvement in performance.
  • May provide direction to information technology support staff; may assist with scheduling and assignment of work and review work upon completion for quality control purposes.
  • Plans coordinates and administers the librarys telecommunication systems.

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:


Education and Experience:

Equivalent to an associates degree from an accredited college or university in computer science or related field and four (4) years of experience providing technical support to users of complex multiplatform technology systems at least two (2) of which must have included network management or system analysis.


Licenses and Certifications:

Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver License.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess mobility to work in a standard office and library setting and use standard office equipment including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person before groups and over the telephone; the ability to operate a motor vehicle and to visit various branches and meeting sites. This classification primarily works indoors and requires movement between work areas. Finger dexterity is needed to access enter and retrieve materials and data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Sufficient eyesight to allow for seeing small wires and color vision is needed to interpret color codes. Positions in this classification occasionally bend stoop kneel reach push and pull when installing and repairing computers and various other equipment.
