Summary

This position is located within Environmental Management Services (EMS) of a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. The Housekeeping Aid Lead is responsible for leading and overseeing the duties of Housekeeping Aids in the performance of housekeeping related services in the various areas of the medical center.


Duties

The position is a working leader for housekeeping operations throughout the VA Medical Center(s). The position leads Housekeeping Aids and others as assigned. The position leads three (3) or more employees in performing their duties while performing the full range of housekeeping tasks required to maintain the Medical center and other facility units in a clean organized and sanitary condition. The position is guided by EMS and Medical Center policies and procedures VA regulations and verbal instructions from EMS Management. The leader communicates instructions from the Supervisor to the employees and then validates the completion of the work assigned. The position coordinates projects with nurses and other area supervisors to ensure work timely and successful completion. This position sets the pace of each task demonstrates methods and techniques and provides direction to assigned employees in their proper usage is cleaning supplies and equipment. Ensures all tasks are complete and deadlines are met.

The Housekeeping Aid Leader engages with all employees to provide purpose direction and motivation in accomplishing all tasks while training the employee in proper procedures and techniques to meet or exceed desired outcomes of workload and safety. This position reports progress of employees to the Supervisor and makes recommendations as necessary on all matters to include the progress of work any infractions of policies and procedures and assures all safety compliance. As a working leader the position also performs the full range of housekeeping employee may clean areas to include but not limited to horizontal and vertical surfaces in: outpatient surgery outpatient clinics inpatient wards community living center central sterile clean rooms patient areas laboratory pharmacy offices support and patient areas isolation rooms storage rooms corridors stairwells toilet rooms shower rooms and all other Medical center areas as required. The position is required to use proper procedures in dust mopping damp mopping emptying waste receptacles emptying and replacing medical waste receptacle washing walls cleaning light fixtures and surfaces as necessary refilling toilet tissue paper towels and soap position makes beds and turns mattresses. May be required to take the lead in textile distribution and inventory management uniform management and Patient Assistance Program; provides on-the-job training to all employees assigned Identifies and recommends to the Supervisor employees that need remedial training based on observations made in the work site. May be required to move furniture and set up conference rooms for meetings trainings or other events.

Additionally the position scrubs strips refinishes and polishes floors by using hand operated and industrial equipment.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave 13 days of sick leave 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work experience or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth adoption or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment full time employees with a total family income below $144000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.

Physical Requirements: The work performed requires walking standing stooping stretching and lifting. Physical effort is required when performing housekeeping duties operating equipment during training sessions or in emergency situations. Work is performed in all areas of the medical center.

    Qualifications

    Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position the job element method is used to match what you the applicant can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. While a specific length of training and experience is not required your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.

    Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

    PHYSICAL EFFORT: The position demands continuous walking standing stooping kneeling pulling and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g. wall washers industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity hand foot and eye coordination and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt dust and debris.

    WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat light and ventilation. Some work may be performed outdoors where there may be exposed to varying degrees of heat and cold as well as inclement weather. PPE may be required in some circumstance as exposure to possible contagious diseases blood and bloody secretion are inherent to this position. Care is required to avoid serious injuries (i.e. broken bones) when working on ladders or when usingpound power equipment or handling hazardous materials.
