Hardware Engineer
San Francisco, CA - USA
Department:
Job Summary
At Bedrock were moving AI out of the lab and into the real world. Our team includes veterans who helped launch Waymo scaled Segment to a $3.2B acquisition and grew Uber Freight to $5B in revenue. Today were deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction equipment across the country improving safety on job sites and accelerating schedules on critical infrastructure projects.
Were not here debating the future of AI. Were deploying it in the real just two years weve raised $350M and achieved the first fully autonomous excavator deployments in construction.
This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. Youll work alongside construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations cant touch. If youre ready to do meaningful work on hard problems wed love to have you join us.
Were growing our sizable fleet of retrofitted autonomous construction machines and were looking for a talented hardware engineer to help define system architecture test and integrate modules into the system and generally provide coverage on critical HW workstreams. You will work alongside senior engineers responsible for designing these systems and be responsible for delivering highly robust and capable autonomous HW systems to the field.
Key Qualifications:
Strong foundational knowledge in traditional HW engineering subjects such as electrical design testing and deployment of hardware systems in rugged outdoor environments
Experience leading large HW development programs from ideation through proto EVT DVT and production stages
Experience with some or all of the following:
High performance/power edge compute including multi-CPU platforms with significant GPU resources
Common autonomous sensing technologies including lidar (spinning flash) camera (visible SWIR NIR etc) radar GNSS and IMUs
Packaging and integration strategies for high performance HW systems in rugged environments including high shock/vibe wide temp ranges IP and solar loading
High speed signaling including GSML multi gigabit ethernet RF
Proficiency in compiled (C/C/Rust) shell (linux bash) or runtime (Python) languages with ability to prototype and debug software components of HW systems as well as run tests data collection analysis and reporting
Description and Responsibilities
The candidate will be responsible for designing characterizing integrating and validating bedrock autonomy hardware.
Help define system and component level HW architecture for autonomous machines
Establish and lead relationships and programs with external vendors to deliver critical components and systems for our autonomous HW platforms
Work with safety team to establish requirements and performance metrics for components and systems
Write reusable high quality sensor data analysis and test automation software (Python and/or C/C/Rust)
Education and Experience
6 years of professional relevant industry experience as hardware engineer or related technical role
Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering Mechatronics or related technical field
Strong fundamentals in HW engineering
Understanding and knowledge of physical processes by which a sensor operates
Hands on experience with characterization of autonomy sensors like lidar radar and cameras
Ways to Stand Out From the Field
Deep experience in any of these areas:
Camera and optics design and performance
Camera imaging pipeline including sensor options ISP tuning compression and storage
Aperture degradation HW components for sensor cleaning including sprayers air puffers wipers ultrasonics and other cleaning methods
High performance embedded compute in particular Nvidia Jetson lineup
High and low speed communication protocols (GMSL FPDlink PCIe multi GigE A2B CAN UART SPI RS232/422/485 etc)
Experience with system engineering requirements definition and V&V
Experience with common standards for HW deployment in construction
ISO26262 ISO16750 SAE J1455 etc
Familiarity with large commercial construction equipment electrical and mechanical HW
Our roles are often flexible. If you dont fit all the criteria or are in another location (especially one where we have an office like SF or NY) please apply anyway! Wed love to consider you.
