OVERVIEW

JOB TITLE: German Teaching Assistant

LOCATION: St. Paul Campus

PAY RATE: $20/hour

HOURS: 4 hours/week

JOB SUMMARY:

The primary responsibility of the German Teaching Assistant (T.A.) is to provide academic support and guidance to students enrolled in German language courses. The T.A. assists students in developing their language skills through individual and group tutoring sessions focused on culture as well as on grammar vocabulary pronunciation speaking reading comprehension and course-related materials.

Essential Functions

  • Create a welcoming and supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement and academic growth.
  • Provide tutoring support to students with a range of German language proficiency levels from beginning to advanced learners.
  • Assist students with homework assignments course materials projects and exam preparation.
  • Reinforce students understanding of German grammar vocabulary speaking skills reading comprehension and cultural topics.
  • Participate in required tutor orientation training sessions and regular tutor meeting.
  • Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions.

German program specific functions might include:

  • Work collaboratively with the German FLTA and the German program director to advance students learning experience.
  • Support students SPARK and CEL engagements.
  • Lead class discussions.
  • Visit all German classes to introduce yourself and the tutoring service.
  • Attend German Club/Program events to build rapport with students.
  • Assist with German events.
  • Offer conversation practice sessions (Kaffeestunde Frühstück gemeinsames Mittagessen) in collaboration with the German FLTA in the library or dining halls.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completed Germ 300 or equivalent.
  • Solid understanding of German language and culture.
  • Proficiency: B2 level or higher.
  • Strong desire and proven ability to help others learn.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated responsible organized with attention to detail.
  • Dependable responsible and committed to maintaining scheduled tutoring hours.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing positively as part of a collaborative team.
  • Willingness to learn receive feedback and continue developing tutoring skills.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for student employment St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate graduate and doctoral levels.
