Job Summary

Overview

Seeking a Genomics Agriculture Aide to work with forage and turf projects involving grass and legume research. This job will primarily be working for USU at the Forage and Range Research Lab (FRRL) on campus. You will help in genomic data management (movement verification storage and backup between computer systems) and data analysis (data formatting and summarization DNA sequence analysis genome assembly gene annotation etc.). At times you will be expected to help in other agricultural research activities that the FRRL conducts.

Hours are flexible typically around 29 hrs/week and most tasks are located on or near campus. The pay will be $25/hr.

Responsibilities
  • The majority of the work will include managing and analyzing genomics data on computers servers and high performance computing (HPC) clusters.
  • Work may also occasionally include field work such as planting weeding harvesting collecting data and irrigation.
  • Other tasks may include basic laboratory work such as prepping samples for DNA extraction or greenhouse work data entry seed collection threshing and cleaning of seed weighing samples grinding and scanning samples.
Qualifications
  • Previous experience with genomic data analysis working on remote servers and HPC clusters through command-line creating basic scripts to automate tasks working in virtual and containerized environments and coding in bash R and Python is highly desired.
  • You will receive training while on the job.
  • Candidates should be detail oriented self-motivated and eager to improve current procedures and methods.
  • Candidates also need to be willing to work in the field at times under sunny conditions.
  • Superior organizational skills are required to keep experiments and data accurate and concise.
  • Candidates need to possess critical thinking skills to ask questions when methods procedures data or instructions are unclear or issues or discrepancies arise.

Majority of work is work indoors in an office enviornment and are protected from weather and/or contaminants but not necessarily occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit use computers and often uses repetitive hand motions (such as typing).

There may be some occasions where work will be outside in the field in the sun in the laboratory or in the greenhouse and may not be protected from weather conditions. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including lifting up to 25 pounds walking and standing. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
