Job Summary
First time hires to the federal government typically start at the beginning salary in the range for their respective grade level.
WG-07: $25.24 (Step 1) to $29.48 (Step 5) per hour - Central and Northern Maine (RUS) Wage Area

- Works with and assists in the leading training and safety of laborers volunteers and Acadia Youth Conservation Corps under the guidance of a Trail Work Leader and Trail Supervisor.
- Engaged in all aspects of trail maintenance construction and repair. This includes drainage and tread maintenance masonry dry stone construction and carpentry work using heavy log and rough-sawn lumber for repair of trail structures and rehabilitation of all trails within Acadia National Park.
- Uses small equipment loaders ATVs etc. and drives crew cabs trucks and passenger vans up to but not exceeding 10000 GVW to transport crew and or materials to the job site.
- Plans sets up and operates typical overhead rigging systems used in trail work to transport material.
Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as permanent appointments but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for approximately 10 months March through December and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

To be minimally qualified your resume must demonstrate that you are able to perform the duties of the Maintenance Worker (Trails) WGposition without more than normal supervision. Examples of relevant experience include but are not limited to:
- Ability to work on a variety of trails and work independently to construct and maintain trail features such as drainage tread stone walls and stone steps.
- Complete small trail projects from drawings or written guidelines.
- Cut and shape stones to and use drystone masonry techniques to construct trails to historic standards following cultural guidelines.
- Construct and maintain trail features including drainage tread stone or timber retaining walls or stone steps.
- Experience with the use of common hand tools and some equipment used in trail construction and repair. Move materials using cable rigging systems in a backcountry setting.

Requirements Continued:
As a condition of employment for accepting this position you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest meet the organization goals and mission of the agency and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the determining if your employment advances the public interest the agency will consider:
- your performance and conduct;
- the needs and interests of the agency;

Under applicable law the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies in writing that the individuals employment should continue and that their appointment should be the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period such appointments are terminated.
Upon completion of your probationary period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification in writing that your continued employment advances the public interest.

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is: 75 miles from Bar Harbor Maine. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in bending lifting and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity include:
- Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing over 100 pounds must carry and roll rocks and logs move rocks of several tons with rock bars use hammers to crush or shape rock and use shovel extensively.
- Frequently hikes up to 20 miles daily and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack power and/or hand tools.
Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects in various terrain up to 13000 feet elevation in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. Trail work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks and logs working in and around rockslide areas working around stock working around explosives falling and bucking trees and working around machinery.
