Job Summary

We expect to fill two vacancies at this time; however additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. The duties below are at the full performance level.
- Inspect all aspects of drilling operations to ensure that operators equipment safety systems and operations are in compliance with the approved regulations.
- Inspect commingled production sites and venting/flaring operations to verify handling of production per approvals.
- Inspect undesirable events such as spills or production losses to document and determine cause remedial action to be taken and volume loss.
- Document problems and determines corrective action.
- This position requires a considerable amount of math at the high school algebra level to verify volume and height of cement other drilling fluids oil and gas volumes to account for production from Federal oil and gas leases and other assignments.

- PET POSITIONS ONLY-0802: You must successfully complete the BLM Petroleum Engineering Technician (PET) Certification Program and continue service in the Federal Government for 2 years from the date of obtaining PET certification.
- PET certification is required at the GS-10 and GS-11 grades and must be maintained.
- As a condition of employment for accepting this position you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period or 2-year trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
This probationary or trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest meet the organization goals and mission of the agency and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the determining if your employment advances the public interest the agency will consider:

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is: 50 miles from the official duty station Anchorage AK Field Office located at 222 W 7th Avenue #13 Anchorage AK 99513.
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/22/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. All candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements.
To qualify for this position at the GS-7 grade level:
- Specialized Experience Requirement: you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 6 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is demonstrated experience as indicated by two of the following four duties:
- Utilize monitoring systems for drilling fluids
- Operate and maintain drilling and production equipment
- Safety compliance (i.e. follow procedures check surface casing and check cementing operations)
- Work closely with engineers and other technical teams to optimize production methods
- Education: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of this position (i.e. major study in petroleum engineering or a related field). You must include transcripts.
- Combination of education and experience. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week and transcripts.
To qualify for this position at the GS-8 grade level:
- Specialized Experience Requirement: you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 7 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is demonstrated experience as indicated by three of the following four duties:
- Utilize monitoring systems for drilling fluids
- Operate and maintain drilling and production equipment
- Safety compliance (i.e. follow procedures check surface casing and check cementing operations)
- Work closely with engineers and other technical teams to optimize production methods
- Education: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of this position (i.e. major study in petroleum engineering or a related field). You must include transcripts.
- Combination of education and experience. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week and transcripts.
- Specialized Experience Requirement: you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 8 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is demonstrated experience as indicated by four of the following five duties:
- Utilize monitoring systems for drilling fluids
- Operate and maintain drilling and production equipment
- Safety compliance (i.e. follow procedures check surface casing and check cementing operations)
- Work closely with engineers and other technical teams to optimize production methods
- Drafting correspondence such as reports inspections violations etc. for gas and oil operations
- Education: Successful completion of at least two full years of graduate education directly related to the work of this position (i.e. major study in petroleum engineering or a related field). You must include transcripts.
- Combination of education and experience. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week and transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community student social). You must submit a copy of your transcript(s) to support claimed education if substituting education for experience.
