The Asset Management division of Hennepin Countys Transportation Operation department is seeking an Engineering Technician to work as part of a team to deliver maintenance projects with opportunities for technical growth through training and working with other experienced professionals. This role encompasses a blend of fieldwork and office-based tasks. Youll be conducting thorough inspections of drainage structures and pavement conditions. Additionally your duties will focus on plan production data input and tracking pavement treatment performances.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Public Works Facility at 1600 Prairie Drive Medina MN 55340 in a field environment within Hennepin County and remote as job duties require. There is no public transportation to the facility. Work hours will be Monday through Friday with flexible hours between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. This is a full-time benefit earning position.This position is internally classified as an Engineering Technician.
Click here to view the job classification specification..In this position you will:- Read interpret and understand construction plans and technical specifications.
- Observe construction activities for compliance with the project plans and specifications.
- Assist in asset inspection data collection and documentation in the field.
- Prepare plan sheets and verify item quantities.
- Conduct inspections for culverts curb and pavement by collecting field data and documenting in ArcGIS ICON (Infrastructure Consultant) and ATOM (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
- Direct train and check the work of technicians in lower level classifications.
Need to have:
- One of the following:
- Three years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway land survey geographic information systems application or related engineering work.
- Three years or more of college or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field.
- Current certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level 2.
- Note: College or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field may be substituted for experience.
- A valid drivers license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County drivers permit.
- Ability to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors and around traffic in all weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Nice to have:- Certification(s) from the MnDOT Technical Certification Program.
- Experience:
- Using computer software programs such as Microsoft Excel Microsoft Word Bluebeam AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
- Engineering design survey permitting processes and inspection work.
- Working with terrain surface and/or roadway geometric design using roadway design software.
- With reading and interpreting MnDOT standard design manuals and technical memos construction plans specifications and other written forms.
- Knowledge of:
- Math functions such as arithmetic algebra and geometry.
- Utilizing computer software such as CAD (OpenRoads InRoads Geopak Civil 3D or equivalent) GIS spreadsheets or databases.
- Construction equipment materials and methods.
- Ability to:
- Communicate with staff at all levels of the organization.
- Schedule prioritize and balance several tasks/projects.
