Description of Work

In this position you will use a variety of electrical and electronic test equipment to troubleshoot malfunctioning Traffic Signal Control Equipment and Intelligent Transportation System devices. If the malfunction is caused by a hardware failure you will remove and replace the defective electronic component and reprogram any associated firmware. If the failure is due to software or networking issues you will use the provided diagnostic software tools to resolve the problem.

This position will require you to perform necessary upgrades and test repaired equipment to verify proper operation. You may also evaluate traffic control equipment for compliance with specifications or assess its functional capabilities for suitability on the Highway System. Additionally you may determine test equipment needs and priorities.

This position may design and implement modifications to traffic control equipment to extend its functionality. You may also modify traffic control cabinets according to designs provided by others to add essential safety-related features. The position involves statewide work with occasional overnight travel and the selected applicant must be able to traverse rough roadside terrain and possess working knowledge of Linux computer networking and Tera Term.

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC13 $50088.00-$87654.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical and electronics engineering operating characteristics of standard electrical and communications equipment electronic components test equipment and practices used in the field of electrical engineering.
  • Considerable knowledge of electronics theory electrical systems communication systems and how they work together to form an integrated system.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and analyze schematic diagrams and maintenance manuals in order to troubleshoot and repair complex electronic equipment down to component level.
  • Demonstrated ability removing and replacing soldered through-hole surface mounted and ball grid array electronic components.
  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associates degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive experience in the repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems including some responsibility for the design of electronic apparatus; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
