Job Summary
This position operates as an Electronics Mechanic located at the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System within the Engineering Department. He/she may be permanently located in Biloxi MS or Pensacola FL but may perform work at any of our outlying outpatient clinics. The purpose of the position is to install modify troubleshoot maintain test calibrate adjust overhaul and repair a wide variety of highly complex integral electronic and electromechanical equipment.
Duties:
- Performs as journeyman level Electronic Mechanic.
- Repairs and maintains electronics including fire alarm systems nurse call systems security systems and cameras.
- Troubleshoots maintains completes preventive maintenance major and minor repairs etc of secondary electrical equipment systems.
- Demonstrates an excellent knowledge of electrical field and fully understands the National Electrical Code.
- Diagnoses trouble and makes necessary repairs/adjustments down to the component level with minor supervision.
- Utilizes a broad knowledge of analog and digital electrical theory electronics and mechanisms.
- Performs work efficiently and in accordance with existing codes and directives.
- Performs preventive maintenance repairs and modifications to a variety of electronic equipment including nurse call panic alarm and camera systems.
- Interprets a variety of electronic schematics wiring diagrams drawings chartsspecification and electrical prints to properly troubleshoot and repair systems.
- Troubleshoots and repairs systems with minimal down time.
- Troubleshoots test equipment properly.
- Installs tests adjusts and modify all types of electronic and electrical equipment.
- Analyzes difficulties quickly replaces or repairs and ensure work is performed efficiently in accordance with existing codes and directives.
- Works closely with Engineering Project Section to ensure all specifications Federal state and local regulations VA Regulations NFPA NEC TJC and OSHA are all met.
- Installs complete transformers and load centers and constructs and builds additions to existing circuits.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge skills and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements:The employee frequently lifts and carries unassisted items weighing up to 40 pounds. They are sometimes required to lift and carry items weighing more than 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. The work requires frequent standing walking bending crouching reaching and stooping. Climbing and working in high places may be required. Some work may require the aid of magnifying lenses eye loops and microscopes to accomplish repairs on miniature components.
Working Conditions: The employee typically works in well lighted heated and ventilated areas. Work is sometimes in high or confined spaces under conditions of heat and cold and outside in inclement weather. The employee is exposed to the possibility of electric shock burns from electrical or RF energy or hot solder and cuts and bruises. Other hazards can include falling from heights injuries from power equipment high noise levels and damage to skin from cleaning fluids. Incumbent must be aware of all job specific health hazards and will wear the appropriate/required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
