The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an Electrical and Electronics Systems Specialist 3 (EESS3) (In-Training) position located in Tumwater WA within the Transportation Data Geographic Information System (GIS) and Modeling Group (TDGMG). Under the direction of the Electrical and Electronics Systems Specialist supervisor this senior level technician position is proficient in travel data collection work with a high level of knowledge in other Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment maintained by WSDOT. This position also works independently and acts in a quality control capacity to ensure all applicable codes are followed to install maintain and repair travel data collection equipment to support state and federal requirements and data-driven decision making. What to Expect
This position performs duties often physical in nature on roadways with fast moving traffic in adjacent lanes and performed primarily outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Typical schedule is Monday through Thursday 40 hours per week for 4 10-hour days including night duty that may last up to 20 continuous weeks in a year.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role theElectrical and Electronics Systems Specialist 3 will:
- Travel throughout Washington state as part of an electronics program team performing installation maintenance and repair of permanently installed traffic counting and truck weighing equipment.
- Set up and take down traffic control for lane closures and flagging operations on Washington state highways.
- Work with WSDOT regions local governments and the Active Transportation Division to install and maintain new permanent bicycle and pedestrian data stations.
- Prepare reports maintain records on equipment serviced and field work performed and check and maintain stock the teams inventory of materials.
- Independently respond to reports of malfunctioning travel data collection equipment.
- Provide input for scheduling and planning of crews to accomplish works.
- Create and update site drawings and traffic control plans as needed.
- Determine the nature of any problem that affects repairs as quickly and safely as possible.
- Build concrete footing and forms and mix concrete for cabinet foundations.
- Operate state vehicles including vehicles of 26000 GVW mini excavator walk behind trencher and concrete saws.
Qualifications
This is an Electrical and Electronics Systems Specialist 3 position. However the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level in theclassification seriesbased on candidate qualifications providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal in-training plan.
To be considered for this opportunity the following competencies are required:
- Electrical and Electronic Systems Installation and Maintenance:Demonstrated experience installing troubleshooting maintaining and repairing electrical electronic telemetry and traffic data collection systems in field or operational environments ensuring reliable system performance.
- Technical Diagnostics and Tools Proficiency:Proven ability to perform technical electrical and electronic work using industry-standard tools diagnostic equipment and established safety practices.
- Technical Documentation and Code Compliance:Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply technical schematics wiring diagrams manuals and specifications.
- Equipment Operation and Field Construction Support:Proficiency in safely operating heavy machinery and equipment including trenchers concrete saws and mini excavators as well as a wide range of power and hand tools to support installation and maintenance activities.
- Safety Practices and Traffic Control:Demonstrated knowledge and consistent application of personal protective equipment (PPE) occupational safety standards and safe work zone practices including working on active roadways with traffic control measures in place.
- Field Operations and Work Environment Adaptability:Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in dynamic field environments including outdoor conditions and active transportation corridors while maintaining productivity and safety.

- Service-Oriented:Takes action to meet the needs of others.
The following qualifications are also required:
- A valid drivers license with the ability to operate state-owned vehicles and the ability to obtain and maintain a CDL class B or above within two (2) years of hire.
- Ability to work in the field in adverse weather conditions outside climates varying from cold or wet to hot humid or dry days or nights.
- Ability to remain in travel status of extended periods of time and work a fluctuating schedule including days swing and nights shift.
- Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Foundational Electrical/Electronic Knowledge:Demonstrated foundational knowledge of electricity or electronics through formal education and/or training.
- Commercial Driving and Heavy Equipment Operation:Demonstrated experience operating commercial vehicles or heavy equipment in support of field operations.
- Traffic Control and Work Zone Standards:Working knowledge of traffic control device setup and compliance with established standards including safe work zone practices and applicable traffic control manuals.

- This position is not eligible for remote work.
- This position will require night duty that may last up to 20 continuous weeks in a year.
- In addition to base salary employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type duties or location of the position. However the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level in the classification series based on candidate qualifications providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal in-training plan.
- The base salaries for each level are:
- Electrical and Electronics Systems Specialist 3: $82872 $100980
- Electrical and Electronics Systems Specialist 2: $78912 $96144
- Electrical and Electronics Systems Specialist 1: $71472 $87048
