Our Headquarters are located on the Torrey Pines Mesa in La Jolla California at the center of the biotech hub. Our Manufacturing facility is in Sorrento Valley.
Position Summary:
The EHS Specialist will lead safety health and environmental compliance programs at our San Diego site. This person will be the on-the-ground expert ensuring the site meets all Cal/OSHA EPA and local regulatory requirements while building a strong culture of safety among employees contractors and visitors. This role reports to the Manager Facility Operations. This position is onsite and typically works a standard shift of 8-5pm local time. The position may require some flexible shift changes as discussed workload arises.
Responsibilities:
- Develop implement and maintain EHS policies procedures and programs in compliance with OSHA Cal/OSHA EPA and local (San Diego County / CUPA) regulations.
- Conduct routine safety inspections job hazard analyses and risk assessments across the facility.
- Lead incident investigations root cause analysis and corrective action tracking for injuries near-misses and environmental events.
- Partner with functional lab areas such as manufacturing R&D and services lab operations.
- Manage hazardous waste handling storage and disposal programs; maintain compliance with hazardous materials business plans (HMBP).
- Interface with regulatory agencies on assigned EHS matters as required.
- Own and maintain required permits (air wastewater hazmat) and ensure timely renewals and reporting.
- Design revamp and deliver EHS training programs (new hire orientation hazard communication PPE ergonomics emergency response etc.).
- Partner with facilities operations and HR to embed safety into daily operations and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Lead or support emergency preparedness planning including evacuation drills and emergency response protocols.
- Track and report EHS metrics (TRIR near-miss rates audit findings) to site and corporate leadership.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agency inspections and audits.
- Support facility team(s) and technicians with project management handling
- Serve as the onsite ISO9001 program owner in partnership with the QA team
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelors degree in Occupational Safety Environmental Science Industrial Hygiene Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 3 years of EHS experience in an industrial manufacturing biotech or similar operational environment.
- 3 years understanding and management of CAPAs (Corrective & Preventative actions)
- 3 years managing/experience handling any of the following regulations such as ISO .
- 3 years experience managing SOPs policies and other procedures in relation to EHS focus.
- Strong working knowledge of Cal/OSHA federal OSHA and EPA regulations.
- Experience managing hazardous waste programs and regulatory permitting
- Excellent communication skills; ability to train and influence at all levels of the organization
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; comfortable with data tracking and reporting
- Able to maintain confidentiality of information systems and employees
- Able to show adaptability prioritize and execute work among competing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
- Certification such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) or ASP (Associate Safety Professional)
- 3 years diagnostic and/or other clinical laboratory experience
- Experience with EHS software/management systems (e.g. Intelex Enablon VelocityEHS)
The estimated base salary range for this role based in the United States of America is: $105000 - $130000. Additionally this role is eligible for to receive equity as part of the compensation package. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to an individuals qualifications location where the role is to be performed internal equity and alignment with market data. Should the level of the role change during the hiring process the applicable salary range may be updated accordingly.
