Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to teach education programs in-person as well as via distance learning channels primarily for school youth and other organized student groups. This position may also assist with regular interpretation programming including staffing the front desk and leading tours.
Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:
- Create program props worksheets handouts other audio/visual aids and computer-generated presentations to enhance education and interpretive programs.
- Assist with day-to day operation of the education program including answering phones record keeping internal communications correspondences and materials maintenance and storage.
- Present environmental and curriculum-based education programs for kindergarten through high school students following established themes learning objectives curriculum requirements and guidelines utilizing teaching methods appropriate to each grade level.
- Research develop and present resource-based interpretive programs for the public during peak visitation periods or if staff shortages occur. Contact with park visitors through informal roving assignments and at visitor centers and responds to visitor questions emergencies or other needs by phone email or in person.
- Serve as mentor for student interns and other team members.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather from snow wind and rain to sun and heat. Work involves standing for long periods of time walking over rough and uneven terrain and living in close quarters with co-workers.

- Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- Occupancy of government quarters may be required.
- Government housing may be available but is not guaranteed.
- You may be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- You may be required to work on-call evenings weekends holidays overtime and/or shift work.
- You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists) you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked suspended canceled or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation and again every year or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities) and at your own expense all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses whether current or past possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State drivers license.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level you must possess at least one or all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: Possess one (1) full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: presenting curricula-based education programs; the research and developmental of curricula-based support materials and activities; performing administrative and development of curricula-based support materials and activities. You must include hours per week worked start and end dates (MM/YY).

EDUCATION: Have four (4) years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelors degree. You must include transcripts. IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: If you are using education to qualify you must document your course work and/or degree completed in your resume or other application materials you submit. You must submit a copy of your transcripts that identifies each course of college or university semester or quarter hours earned grade received and date completed. If you are qualifying based on education and you do not submit specific course work information as described previously your application will be rated not qualified for consideration. COMBINATION: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e. beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. For example six (6) months of specialized experience (50% experience) and 90 semester hours of qualifying education (50% education). You must include transcripts. You must include hours per week worked start and end dates (MM/YY).
To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level you must possess at least one or all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: Possess one (1) full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is work such as planning and implementing a comprehensive curriculum-based education program serving elementary through college students independently to research develop and present education programs and global concepts using a hands-on approach. You must include hours per week worked start and end dates (MM/YY).

EDUCATION: Have one (1) full year of directly related graduate education that demonstrates the knowledge skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. You must include transcripts. IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: If you are using education to qualify you must document your coursework and/or degree completed in your resume or other application materials you submit. You must submit a copy of your transcripts that identifies each course the college or university semester or quarter hours earned grade received and date completed. If you are qualifying based on education and you do not submit transcripts your application will be rated not qualified for consideration. COMBINATION: Have an equivalent combination of directly related graduate education and experience. This may be computed by first determining your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required above; then determining your directly related graduate education as a percentage; and then adding the two percentages which must equal or exceed 100% to qualify. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community student social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1560 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402b7) based on series and grade anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1560 hours during that period you are still welcome to apply. However please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1560 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1560 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1560 hours unless granted an exception by OPM.

Physical Demands: Work responsibilities require occasional heavy lifting strenuous periods of walking long periods of standing or sitting. and working in sometimes harsh environmental conditions of wind cold rain snow heat. and humidity.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in an adequately lighted and climate-controlled office as well as in the field. Office work will require the ability to sit for extended periods of time working at a computer. Field work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks and discomforts associated with the visiting remote park sites. Distance learning programs may be delivered from inside a cave requiring exposure to low ceilings periods of darkness damp conditions and uneven terrain.
