Job Summary
Were looking for someone who generates distinctive story ideas identifies trends uses data and produces content for multiple platforms including CQ and Roll Call. We seek a journalist who can lead and inspire reporters to produce high-impact enterprising stories about the relationship between the White House and Congress as well as the judicial branchs effect on the White House and Congress and the influential groups and advocates that seek to influence them.
CQ and Roll Call report on political power through the lens of Congress from the campaigns that send members of Congress to Washington to the biographies of those members the legislative process and the people and organizations shaping it both inside the federal government and outside of it.
All applicants must submit four (4) published writing samples from newspapers news websites or news magazines that demonstrate reporting and writing ability.
The position is based in Washington DC and requires daily reporting from the Capitol. The base salary range for this position is $110000 - 135000 per year.
- Conceive assign and edit sharply focused news analyses and enterprise that help CQ and Roll Call subscribers understand the policy and political debates among the executive legislative and judicial branches and the people who have influence on the debate.
- Coach lead manage and partner with a talented team of political reporters.
- Shape develop and produce content for video audio and graphics to complement a variety of story-telling techniques that showcase content on different platforms.
- Work collaboratively with other CQ Roll Call reporters and editors on stories that connect the dots among people policy and politics.
- Edit news and enterprise stories in other CQRC coverage areas as needed to support your fellow assignment editors/team leaders in what is known as a second edit.
- Analyze and incorporate data in your journalism particularly from our proprietary databases in CQ and .
- Primary editorial supervision of and its newsletter By the Numbers.
- Ability to develop new products around CQ Vote Studies and other proprietary databases.
- Work with production and editing teams to ensure smooth workflow.
- Help amplify CQ Roll Calls journalism and brands through social media events and news media appearances.
- A strong track record of reporting writing and editing high-impact journalism.
- Excellent news judgment and copy editing skills.
- A desire to produce journalism that is nonpartisan and carefully reported.
- Mastery of AP style.
- 5 years of daily journalism experience.
- 3 years experience working with campaign finance and financial disclosure requirements and filing deadlines (FEC lobbying disclosure and etc.)
- Familiarity with congressional biographical data and voting records.
- Proficiency with WordPress.
- Experience editing text for video and information graphics.
- Experience with HTML.
- Experience with building web features.
- Comfortable working with large language models.
