Job Description:

The Department of Juvenile Justice is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth and strengthen families and communities across the Commonwealth.

DJJs Division of Education is seeking a qualified Earth Science Teacher to provide high-quality standards-based instruction that supports the individual learning needs of students and aligns with the Commonwealths educational standards statutes and program certification requirements. The teacher will design and deliver engaging research-based instruction foster a safe respectful and student-centered learning environment and use student data to inform instruction monitor progress and promote academic success.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

(1) Earned a bachelors degree from an accredited institution and graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in Earth Science; or

(2) Earned a bachelors degree from an accredited institution and completed a major in Earth Science Geology or Environmental Science with a minimum of 32 semester hours in Earth Sciences including at least one course in each of the following areas: structural geology petrology paleontology oceanography meteorology and astronomy/space science; or

(3) Earned an endorsement in another science discipline and completed at least 18 semester hours in Earth Sciences including at least one course in each of the following areas: structural geology petrology paleontology oceanography meteorology and astronomy/space science.

Licensure:

Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching Certificate/License with an endorsement in Earth Science.

Additional Considerations

Experience as an Earth Science Teacher in a secondary setting preferred; Experience teaching at-risk youth preferred.

Applicants seeking a provisional license should be aware that licensure requirements are based on Virginia Department of Education regulations.

Candidates whose bachelors degree aligns with the Earth Science content area may complete required assessments and coursework during the provisional licensure period.

Candidates whose bachelors degree does not align with the content area must demonstrate content proficiency through required assessments prior to submission for provisional licensure with successful assessment completion to take place within the first six months of employment.
