Job Summary
Under the direction of the Fleet Manager and Director of Public Works the Diesel Mechanic maintains the Citys vehicles and equipment in good working conditions. This position is considered an essential employee for emergency situations. The mechanic may be subject to a schedule change for emergency situations.
- Essential Duties & Required Qualifications
- Work schedule is Monday Thursday or Tuesday - Friday from 6:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m. (schedule is subject tochange)
- Performs skilled Diesel mechanical work on a wide variety of city fleet vehicles including public safety vehicles (fire apparatus and police vehicles)
- Diagnoses and repairs diesel gasoline and two-cycle engines and transmissions including heavy-duty truck automatic transmissions
- Performs major and minor repairs on all air conditioning systems including automotive medium-heavy and heavy trucks
- Performs major and minor mechanical work including but not limited to repair and replace water/fuel pumps radiators alternators differentials timing chains belts hoses fuses valves and batteries.
- Performs skilled mechanical work on a wide variety of city equipment that includesrepairs on engines and electrical problems.
- Lift heavy machinery and equipment.
- Performs vehicle and medium-heavy truck diagnostics using scan tools and computers.
- Assists in locating mechanical parts
- Transport of vehicles and equipment to various locations
- Order parts needed for repairs and inventory as direct by Shop Foreman.
- Document work when Fleet Manager is out.
- Repair small engines industrial pumps and lawn maintenance equipment.
- Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment at all times.
- Operate a vehicle lift tire changer tire balancer and also all other shop tools including power and hand tools.
- Responds to service calls for assistance; retrieves or repairs vehicles and equipment in the field as needed.
- Responsible for cleaning and maintaining shop and equipment.
- Required on-call rotation
- As an essential employee this position is subject to after-hours call out for emergency situations which can include but not limited to icy weather police department assistance or other emergency/disaster activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or its equivalent.
- Three years related work experience and/or technical training in diesel repair.
- Texas Drivers License or ability to obtain a Texas drivers license within 90 days per state law.
- Five years related work experience and/or technical training in diesel repair.
- Either Medium-heavy truck (T Series) Auto Maintenance and Light Repair (G Series) or Automobile & Light Truck (A Series) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications.
- Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to balance time pressures emergency situations irregular schedules frequent change of tasks.
- Must deal with public and team members in a courteous and diplomatic manner.
- Must be knowledgeable of auto mechanics and the operation and repair of heavy equipment repair hydraulic systems diesel and gasoline engines and heavy equipment diagnose problems and repair vehicles work with a variety of hand and power tools perform paint and body work on automobiles.
- Must be able to read wiring oil circuits diagrams.
- Ability to: read and interpret written information; read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Physical Demands & Additional Information
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop kneel crouch or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 75 pounds. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and push pull drag up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Working Environment
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives; risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the work environment varies between moderate loud and very loud).
