  • Shift / Schedule: Full-time. Hybrid schedule: in-office TuesdayThursday remote Monday/Friday (if preferred). Can work in the office 5 days/week. Cannot work less than 3 days in office. Approximately 30% field work; may vary depending on time of year.
  • Travel Requirements: Local travel for field visits. May be long-distance travel; pre-approved and reimbursable. Mileage reimbursed. No per diem or travel allowance; hotels may be reimbursable if approved.

Job Summary

This role creates updates and revises sketches working drawings and contract documents using SmallWorld GIS software or manual means of drafting to meet customer requirements. The position prepares 2D and 3D models and requires the ability to read and comprehend detailed customer requirements data sheets and supplier specifications. Assignments will be completed utilizing information provided by project engineering architectural or technical services staff under the direction of a supervisor. The role requires familiarity with drafting techniques and engineering concepts and terminology as well as the ability to read engineering drawings and blueprints. The Designer prepares documentation to support design drawings and prepares bills of material schedules and assists engineering personnel with formal drawing transmittals and construction issues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and manage electric distribution projects for new and existing customers.
  • Responsibilities include customer interaction project management field assessments and system design using SmallWorld (customized GIS).
  • Tasks include transformer sizing underground cable routing and pole placement.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Distribution Engineers to ensure system reliability.
  • Check SAP for new customer contacts.
  • Perform field visits or computer-based design work.
  • Attend weekly scheduling meetings (Monday/Tuesday) and team touchpoints (Thursday).
  • Handle highly varied day-to-day tasks including changing tasks last minute to accommodate customers and/or high-profile or urgent matters.
  • Support the electric side and collaborate with service/gas designers.
  • Primarily support external customers (residential and/or commercial) with new service requests or modifications.
  • Use personal vehicle for field travel with mileage reimbursement; may use pool/design cars if approved by managers.
Required Skills
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Organizational and project management skills.
  • Basic electrical knowledge or background.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to effectively translate basic data to customers (average joe).
  • People skills.
  • Desire to learn and be a self-starter when required to work with limited supervision with team members.
  • Adaptability accountability and independence.
Preferred Skills
  • GIS or AutoCAD experience.
  • Electrical or utility background.
  • Experience working with customers in high-stress/high-demand environments.
Required Experience
  • Open to various backgrounds (construction call center police etc.).
  • Experience in electrical or utility fields is a plus.
Education Requirements
  • No specific degree required.
  • No certifications required.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements
  • Hybrid of individual and team work in a collaborative office environment with idea sharing.
  • Mix of field and office work; approximately 30% field work varying by time of year.
  • Field work includes visits to residential commercial and construction sites.
  • Safety gear will be provided: glasses hard hat safety vests etc.
  • Standard utility safety protocols apply.
  • Overtime not expected; work-life balance emphasized.
  • Willingness to relocate at own expense required for non-local candidates.
  • Proficiency expected in 69 months; full comfort with the role typically takes 2 years.
  • On-the-job training provided especially for proprietary systems.
  • Over-the-shoulder/mentoring training along with training courses and site observations.
