Job Summary
The Seattle Times a family-owned news organization and one of the nations premier regional news sourcesis seeking a leader to join our award-winning theDeputy Business Editor you will help guide an eight-person team that coversaerospace the tech sector realestate affordabilitychallengesand thehealth of thelocaleconomy. We are looking for someone who inspirescoachesand empowers journalists.
The Deputy Business Editor will oversee reporters and collaborate with the Business Editor on coverage of regional economicand employmenttrendsas well asmajor Northwest players such as Boeing Amazon MicrosoftCostcoandStarbucks. The successful candidate will know how to balance breaking news deep-diveenterpriseand watchdog stories and will tailor high-concept and complex stories to a general readership showing how business news affects workers small-business owners consumers homebuyers/rentersand others who call the Pacific Northwest home.
Responsibilities
- Leads reporters to produce daily news and longer-term enterprise stories.
- Workswithnewsroom departments to lead ambitious projects that cut broadly acrossdisciplines and topical areas. Collaborates withvisualjournalistsandthedigitalteamto create rich experiences for readers.
- Ralliesstaff torespond quickly and accurately to breaking newsestablishingThe Seattle Times as the leading source of information in a competitive marketplace.
- Usesanalytics to inform coverage that reachesnew readers winssubscribersand builds loyalty.
- Embracesdiversity in the workplace and in our coverage thinking inclusively about everything from story framing and sourcing to word choice and presentation.
- Recruitshiresandtrainswith the long-term sustainability of the newsroom in mind. Contributes to a healthyinclusiveand welcoming workplace culture.
- Helps journalists prioritize and focusina busy environment.
- Helps ready the daily print section.
- Worksoccasionalnightsor weekends when news requires it.
- Represents the business section and The Seattle Times to the community and other groups as needed.
- Evaluates wire stories for use in the business report online and in print.
- Understands and upholds the standardsethicsand mission of journalism at The Seattle Times.

- Experience:Strong preference for candidates with experience as a supervising editor.
- Excellent team-leadership skills with proven successdevelopingandretainingtop talent. Passion for coaching and mentoring journalists.
- Demonstrated record of successfully reporting and editing business coverage including complex enterprise story packages as well as breaking news.
- Strong news judgment with impeccable standards of accuracyhonestyand fairness.
- Cultural competence anda proventrack recordof practicinginclusive journalism.
- Sophisticated communicationskills;ability to negotiate collaborate and engagein sometimeschallenging conversations with staffleadershipand readers.
- Demonstrated skill at coaching reporters to find shape and report storiesusingtools such as datasets earningsreportsand public records requests. Familiarity with laws governing bankruptcy employmentdebtand other business matters.
Compensation:The full salary range for this position is $89900 to $127000. For this opening we expect to pay between $95000 to $115000 depending on experience and qualifications.
