Job Summary
Position Summary
PBSG is seeking a Deckhand to join the crew of the live-aboard Dredge Wallace McGeorge working on the navigable waterways of the Mississippi Valley. This role is responsible for deck operations that support the dredging process including handling pipeline anchors wires and rigging as well as general vessel maintenance. Assignments are made based on individual skills and dredge needs and may include deck engine room galley or other support functions. This is physically demanding work performed in severe-duty marine conditions including inclement weather (snow ice extreme heat rain fog etc.). Prior experience working in a marine environment especially on the inland waterway and Mississippi River is beneficial but not required. Key Responsibilities
Deck Operations
Handle mooring lines wires anchors and rigging during dredge positioning and pipeline moves
Assist with connecting disconnecting and floating/sinking dredge pipeline and pontoons
Operate deck winches cranes and related deck machinery under supervision
Assist with tending moving and anchoring the dredge and support barges
Perform line handling and small-boat/skiff operations as directed
Maintenance & General Labor
Chipping and painting and other general maintenance of deck pipeline and hull areas
Assist with routine upkeep of deck equipment rigging and tools
Responsible for housekeeping onboard the dredge including deck and common work areas
Working from heights greater than 6 ft
Support galley engine room or other departments as dredge needs require
Safety
Maintain the highest level of safety in all aspects of the job
Promote job site safety; encourage safe work practices
Identify and correct job site hazards immediately
Follow proper procedures for working around heavy equipment rigging and moving machinery
Support and encourage team members learning and development
Embrace PBSGs culture
Qualifications
Preferred (not required - PBSG will assist in obtaining certifications)
Experience working in a marine environment
Knowledge of marine duties and safety procedures
Experience with deck operations rigging or line handling
CPR First Aid AED training
Boaters Education Certificate
Requirements
Valid drivers license (must possess and maintain)
High school diploma or equivalent
Reliable transportation to and from job location
Must meet at least one of the following:
Experience working in a marine environment
Experience with deck rigging or line-handling work
General construction labor or industrial maintenance experience
Mechanical aptitude or experience with hand and power tools
Physical & Lifestyle Requirements
Willing to live aboard the Dredge Wallace McGeorge on a 2 weeks on / 1 week off rotation
Willing and able to work 12 hours/day up to 84 hours/week
Willing to work days nights or extended/flexible shifts as conditions require
Willing to live and work closely with crew members in close quarters
Must be comfortable working over and adjacent to water
Ability to swim
Ability to climb ladders/stairs and perform repetitive bending and stooping
Ability to lift and carry at least 76 lbs including up and down ladders
Must pass a Functional Capacity Exam (FCE) and be deemed Fit for Duty
