Description of Work

The Drug & Alcohol Impaired Driving (DAID) Specialist position supports impaireddriving enforcement and public safety initiatives by providing technical training and administrative expertise across an assigned multicounty region. This position trains law enforcement personnel in evidential breath alcohol testing alcohol screening devices and standardized field sobriety testing (SFST) while ensuring the accuracy reliability and regulatory compliance of breath alcohol instruments and test sites.

Work includes maintaining and servicing evidential instruments managing preventive maintenance schedules inspecting alcohol testing locations and producing documentation that supports program integrity. The role provides expert consultation and courtroom testimony related to instrument operation alcohol pharmacology and impaireddriving detection.

The DAID Specialist collaborates closely with law enforcement agencies court personnel and traffic safety partners to advance coordinated enforcement and public safety strategies.

This position covers a region including Alamance Caswell Durham Franklin Granville Halifax Nash Northampton Orange Person Vance Wake and Warren.



Key Duties Include:
- Train law enforcement and related personnel in evidential breath alcohol testing alcohol screening test devices and standardized field sobriety testing.

- Maintain service and verify the proper function of evidential breath alcohol instruments according to state regulatory standards.

- Conduct inspections of alcohol testing instruments test sites and screening devices to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.

- Manage preventive maintenance schedules and document instrument service repairs and performance checks.

- Provide expert testimony regarding instrument operation maintenance procedures alcohol pharmacology and impaireddriving detection.

- Design and deliver training content that incorporates current legal requirements scientific standards and agency procedures.

- Coordinate with local regional and state law enforcement partners to support impaireddriving enforcement and public safety initiatives.

- Maintain accurate records related to training delivery compliance audits equipment inspections and maintenance activities.

- Support statewide program initiatives by assisting with regional needs assessments technical problem resolution and operational planning.

- Travel extensively within the assigned region to conduct training inspections collaborations and field support activities.

Salary Grade Range: $50088.00 - $87654.00

Recruitment Range: $50088.00 - $61784.00

The Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Expertlevel proficiency maintaining and servicing evidential breath alcohol instruments including performing preventive maintenance documenting service activity and resolving technical issues consistent with program standards.

  • Demonstrated experience conducting inspections of alcohol testing instruments screening devices and test sites including verifying regulatory compliance and documenting inspection outcomes.

  • Advanced skill delivering technical training in evidential breath alcohol testing alcohol screening test devices and standardized field sobriety testing including developing instructional content aligned with current scientific and legal standards.

  • Proven experience providing courtroom testimony on instrument operation maintenance procedures alcohol pharmacology and impaireddriving detection supported by accurate preparation of technical records.

  • Strong proficiency managing regional program operations including coordinating with multiple lawenforcement agencies completing compliance audits maintaining training and maintenance records and supporting statewide impaireddriving initiatives.

This Position Is Eligible For A Fully Remote Work Option

Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instructor Certification must be obtained within 1 year of hire.

NC DHHS Permit to Perform Chemical Analyses of Breath must be obtained within 30 days of
hire.

NC DHHS Certificate to Perform Preventative Maintenance must be obtained within 90 days of
hire.


Alcohol Screening Test Device Instructor Certification within 180 days of hire.

Must possess/be able to obtain and maintain a valid NC Drivers License.

Physical Requirements:
  • Lift 50 pounds.

  • Load and unload a cargo van.

  • Load-in and load-out equipment at training and test sites.

  • Operate and drive a cargo van long and short distances.

  • Bending and kneeling to connect/disconnect equipment.

  • Operate a computer keyboard.
