Summary


Our Department of Local Services (DLS) Directors Office is currently seeking to hire a Customer Support Liaison who plays a role in support of DLS. This position will be responsible for building a cohesive workplace culture across the work unit.

Currently the Deputy Directors Office has responsibility for community relations for unincorporated King County economic development performance monitoring service response contracting emergency operations intergovernmental relations participatory budgeting and community needs activities. Staff is based in King Street Center in downtown Seattle. This position will be required to work from the King Street Center building in Seattle. There will be times that this role will participate in community events with DLS staffing on evenings and on weekends.

About the Department of Local Services:
King County is the local service provider for theroughly onequarter-million people who live in the unincorporated areas of the county; collectively these communities would be the second largest city in the state. The Department of Local Services includes a Directors Office Road Servicesand Permitting divisions as well as long-range planning code writing subarea planning and comprehensive planning teams. Together this department provides a single executive point of accountability for delivering local services to all unincorporated areas of King County.

Job Duties

  • Lead and manage intake tracking and reporting of email inquiries calls and comments received from community members leadership and elected officials for the directors office.
  • Develop a department-wide tracking and reporting system of all customer inquiries and responses including Frequently Asked Questions. Maintain records of responses to ensure consistency across recipients and to ensure compliance with public records retention laws.
  • Be responsible for coordinating the full lifecycle of inquiries and service requests from intake through response and fulfillment. Provide regular status reports and trending issues and topic evaluations received from external comments for leadership.
  • Develop effective networks with the agency and key King County staff to support timely research and response. Coordinate with internal subject matter experts to write review and prepare timely written email responses for signature by division or department management or elected officials.
  • Assist with coordinating or participating in-person and remote (online) community outreach and internal engagement as needed. Examples include in-person or online community meetings open houses and major staff engagement meetings and events.
  • Foster a spirit of inclusion and belonging while coordinating collaborating and communicating with a wide variety of people with diverse backgrounds. Incorporate equity and social justice wherever possible into the DLS customer service program.

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

  • At least five years of progressively responsible professional public communications and community relations experience in transportation or construction-related communications; public works community planning and/or development; or comparable public agency experience.
  • Expertise in writing researching and implementing tactful equitable communications and community outreach plans for small and large projects or programs.
  • Advanced skills at identifying and correcting errors in grammar punctuation and spelling. Ability to recognize and use AP Style.
  • Is extremely organized and can handle multiple competing priorities in a busy environment with thoughtfulness and calm.
  • Experience navigating the political environment; able to act in a tactful and diplomatic manner with diverse groups customers and elected officials and their staff.
  • Is a compassionate person who has several years of substantial experience in the field of communications customer service and public community outreach.
  • Demonstrated passion for equity belonging inclusion and social and racial justice.
  • Experience in customer relations with individuals and groups with diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience working in fast paced high-pressure environments with a variety of target audiences.

Desired Qualification

  • Experience with King County or local government issues processes and procedures.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of the DLS mission vision and organization including experience working in the field of transportation and permitting particularly at the local level.


Supplemental Information

INTERVIEW SCHEDULE:
Those applicants who pass the initial screening will be invited to participate in a 15-minute phone interview the week of 08/03/2026.
If you are selected to move forward after the phone interview you will be invited for a 45 minute in-person interview in the week of 08/10/2026.

Special duty opportunities are open only to current King County career service employees who have completed the initial probation. Special duty applicants must have approval from their current supervisor to accept an assignment. Current employees selected for special duty will be compensated based upon the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement King County Personnel Guidelines or Coalition Labor Agreement for their base assignment.

WORK SCHEDULE:
The work week is normally Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. but may at times require work outside of normal business hours and on weekends. This position is Exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.

EMERGENCY DESIGNATION STATUS:

This position has been designated as Non-Mission Critical -Employees who staff county functions or services that may be delayed suspended or diverted in an emergency while essential functions are prioritized Mission Critical.

UNION MEMBERSHIP:

This position is non-represented.

TELEWORKING REQUIREMENTS:

This is a hybrid position. We will work in the office at least three days a week to foster connection and responsiveness arrive prepared and on time and structure meetings with clear goals and next steps.

Employees must reside in WashingtonStateand within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
