Martinez Unified School DistrictClassified Job DescriptionCustodian40 Hours/Week - 12 Months/YearDefinitionUnder supervision to keep an assigned building area clean sanitary safe and orderly; to secure rooms and buildings; to do special cleaning and building maintenance; and to do related work as of DutiesœSweeps scrubs dusts and otherwise cleans offices hallways workshops lavatories classrooms cafeterias auditoriums libraries gyms pools and stairways; œStrips mops waxes and buffs floors; œVacuums rugs and pools; œEmpties and washes trash containers; œWashes windows walls and woodwork and does touch-up painting; œCleans erasers blackboards chalkboards desks cabinets shelves and window sills; œSweeps sidewalks and curbs and picks up debris from school grounds; œReplaces light bulbs; œChecks for broken locks and broken glass and reports need for repair;œAdjusts desks; sets up tables and chairs; œPerforms minor repairs on locks pencil sharpeners and equipment;œSecures building and turns lights and alarms off and on; œOperates buffers vacuum cleaners and other custodial equipment;œRaises lowers folds and stores flags; œLights and turns off boilers and heaters; œAssists in the restoration of buildings and grounds during summer vacation; œDirects students and visitors; œPatrols areas to prevent vandalism and theft; œMay supervise student workers; and œMay be on call for emergency QualificationsKnowledge of:œModern cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment; andœFirst aid and safety related to cleaning methods practices and to:œUse cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency;œPerform heavy physical labor;œWork without immediate supervision;œBe on call in case of emergencies;œUnderstand and follow a work schedule;œUnderstand and carry out oral and written directions;œMaintain cooperative working relationships with students and others contacted in the course of work; andœPass pre-employment functional capacity assessment and experience in custodial work; character references may be to the completion of the eighth of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operators License is required.
