ABOUT JASC

The Japanese American Service Committee (JASC) is a non-profit community organization dedicated to supporting seniors families and individuals through social services cultural programming and community events. We are seeking a reliable proactive and skilled Part-Time Custodian & Handyman to ensure our building and facilities remain clean safe well-maintained and welcoming for community members and staff.

JOB SUMMARY

The Custodian & Handyman is responsible for day-to-day general facility cleaning routine preventative maintenance minor repairs and event room setups/breakdowns. The ideal candidate takes pride in keeping facilities running smoothly has strong basic trade skills (plumbing carpentry painting) and thrives in a supportive community-focused environment.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Custodial & Sanitation Duties

Daily Cleaning: Sweep mop scrub and vacuum administrative offices common rooms classrooms and hallway floors.

Restroom Maintenance: Clean sanitize and restock all restrooms throughout the building.

Trash & Recycling: Empty trash receptacles and recycling bins daily; transfer waste to main outdoor dumpsters.

High-Touch Surfaces: Disinfect door handles light switches counter tops and railings.

Supply Inventory: Monitor custodial and cleaning supplies notifying supervisor when reordering is required.

Facilities Maintenance & Minor Repairs

Daily Inspection: Perform routine visual walkthroughs of the building and grounds to identify maintenance issues safety hazards or needed repairs.

General Repairs: Perform minor repairs on doors drywall light fixtures furniture cabinets and hardware.

Basic Plumbing & Electrical: Fix leaking faucets clear minor pipe/toilet clogs and replenish consumable supplies in bathrooms and kitchen areas

Seasonal Upkeep: Assist with light exterior upkeep such as clearing walkways basic debris removal shoveling and ice spreading in the winter.

Mechanical & Utility Checks: Monitor critical facility systemsincluding HVAC units chiller water heater and sump pumpchecking for abnormal noises leaks pressure drops or error codes.

Event Setup & Support

Event Cleaning: Maintain clean facilities during community programs cultural gatherings and special events (e.g. monitoring restrooms emptying trash bins wiping spills and maintaining common areas).

Room Setups: Set up tables chairs and basic audio/visual equipment for meetings community programs and special events.

Tear-Down: Clean and reset facilities following events.

Building Security: Ensure windows and doors are secured at the end of shifts.

Requirements

Willingness and availability to work occasional evenings and weekends based on JASCs event calendar.

2. 2 years of custodial building maintenance or general handyman experience with familiarity operating around commercial mechanical systems.

3. Basic understanding of mechanical systems (HVAC chillers sump pumps water heaters) and hands-on skill with hand and power tools for carpentry plumbing and painting repairs.

4. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs climb ladders (including roof access) bend stoop and stand/walk for extended periods.

5. Detail-oriented self-motivated organized and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

6. Friendly respectful and comfortable working around community members during public events.

7. Must be able to pass a standard criminal background check.
