It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention protection and preparation as well as the care custody and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody healthcare and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration Health Services Rehabilitation & Reentry Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

This position reports directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager at a multi-custody female correctional facility and provides first-line supervision for Correctional Officer IIIs.


Job Duties Included:

Provide supervision for subordinate staff conducting shift line-up making shift assignments and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
Complete review and maintain time reports duty rosters leave schedules performance evaluations and administrative forms.
Account for persons and funds to ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready.
Assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody security and welfare of offenders is maintained.
Arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.

About The Division of Institutions:

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum medium close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety security and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff program facilitators and administrative personnel.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
